I'm really debating what I need to do to increase flow for a possible try at sps. Many folks are saying to do a MJ mod. I have tried it once already and failed. The pump made an aweful loud sound. So my question is...are they worth the effort/expense in parts?

My concern is that they really aren't reliable, and when you finally get done putting them together right...you could have paid a good amount towards a tunze or something else. Please let me know if I'm wrong on this.

TIA

well, i 've done several amd i am very impressed with how they work and thier quality for the money, really, scince it is a mod kit, they are only as good as you make them. did you get the kit from mjmods.com?

i tried one as well....it was a disaster..i just threw it away..i will get a Seio next time i need a powerhead..they are fun to try if you can get them to work!

I was soooo frustrated with the first couple we did. They kept blowing apart and totally ticking me off. I finally found the trick is to glue the crap out of them and I'm thrilled! I had seios previously but didn't like the bulk and didnt get the flow I get with the mods. What I have been doing is gluing the end cap to the shroud itself and making one unit out of that peice. Scott took the extra MJ bearing and glues it on the end and makes the rod a teensy bit longer and glues that all together too. I have three of them in my 90 plus a seio that is coming out this weekend when we build another mod out of their larger shroud kit. They are great once you get them put together right.

Simply love Them!

Ron,
I wish you would have said something. I love em. I also like the device that was invented to make them occilate like a sea swirl. Like Colleen said, they are fantastic if put together right. If anyone is dissapointed let me know. I would love to have another one.

what is the "extra MJ bearing". Not sure what part you're talking about.

I consider myself quite skilled at making things. I've DIY'd many things. But I like to be confident that my work is going to pay off in the end. If I can reasonably assume that I can put something together and save money...i'll usually do it. But with these MJ mods, I don't want to end up buying 3 kits to make one mj mod because i messed up twice. I'm a pragmatist and I realize that by the time I buy 3 kits, glue, etc...i would be very close to just being able to buy a $137 tunze stream powerhead.

I hope you guys see where i'm coming from on this. Seems like a lot of people are frustrated with them. Does anyone have a more recent link/thread that illustrates how to put one of these together the "Right Way"? That would help i think.

the instructions on MJmods weren't exact..they told the basic way to build one, but not exact specifications..i didn't know how long to cut the metal rod..it didn't say if the bottom of the metal rod needed the rubber bearing..some people say that they use them for that...i just didn't like the vague instructions

I built the 1200 with the Dumas prop did not buy the 'Kit' but did get the graphite rods and props there. - - will be great for the 210 but a little much for my 75 - You can get more direction on reefcentral. You can use Sched 40 slip couplers for the larger mod since the OD of sched 80 and 40 are the same and the coupler is only used as a chamber for the prop and is not really structural. The price is about 1/3 of 80. I made my own face plate and will modify its design to be even slimmer. I am going to build a MJ900 with the smaller Octura prop for my 75 but they do push water. Good bang for the buck and there are also magnet holders avail so you can position it anywhere you want - awesome There is a video I will look for the link here it is http://www.reefvideos.com/reefshowcase_04_content.html

Ed where is the oscillation mod found?? I would like to try that!! Tinker Tinker tinker seems to be a thing with reefers!

Well we bought three and I have three working nicely in my tank. Didn't waste anything. The other bearing I mentioned is the other red and black cap that is extra when you take the MJ apart. Maybe Scott can post his picture of it. Anyway I love mine.

Which one of those two bearings didn't you use on the mod then? The one that attaches to the end of the rod that is inserted into the pump housing...or the one that attaches to the end of the rod that sticks out past the propeller?

Reason I ask is I used both on my mod because that's what I thought you were suppose to do. Sorry for the confusion. Just trying to figure this out.

Just the rod end piece removed from the orginal prop. Instead of using just one she uses both.

Which kind of gives me a idea, I wonder if one could drill the mod end cap to accept the endpoint instead of extending out of the end cap and glueing it.

Gives me something to try. :)
