how big of a tank are you planning on getting??? also, how much is your lfs charging for the tangs??

$30 - 35 if I remember correctly. The tank will be 6' x 4' x (as tall as I can afford)'.

As Ron said, you'll be very surprised just how quickly these tangs grow. 2"/year is a conservative estimate and averaged over their expected lifespan. How quickly they actually get in a captive system will have a lot to do with the quality of the habitat and foods fed. It would not be uncommon for a well cared for tang to achieve almost 3" in it's first year.

Personally I recommend waiting until you have the larger tank up and running. You never know what circumstances will arise in the interim. There are plenty of hippo tangs available all the time; they'll be there when you're ready.

6' is good but don't put too much into the height of the tank, stick to around 24" or so. The higher it gets just means more money will be needed for stronger lights. Fish don't factor into it at all. They swim back and forth, side to side not up and down.

There is just something magical about being able to look up and down at a tank. Although thats prob a few tanks away. :)
