Just Ordered 50b from Barrier

I was wondering if I should try and drill it and get a sump. My current setup I have a HoB skimmer from Greenskimmer which I love. I know if I go the sump route I'll have to buy plumbing supplies another skimmer and a return pump.

I currently have a 20long I could use for a sump currently.

Here is my question for everyone? Should I wait and try to drill and piece together a sump and such. Or stick with the HoB protein skimmer and call it good?


I know there must be all sorts of wonderful benefit to having a sump with more water volume and such, but I am still pretty novice at the whole construction of things.

Please if you can give me some of your information you've learned and some confidence in possibly taking the venture to the "sump nation".

drilling your tank isnt too hard to do. just take your time and it will go great. Just plan out your plumbing and stand and sump ahead so you dont have to do it on the fly. it you need help just ask.

Save the tank until you have fully researched and are comfortable with setting up a sump. Patience in this hobby is key. I find it reassuring to post pics of my project and get opinions of what I am doing before making things final.

Yeah i figured I might pick it up and wait a bit. Before setting it up. Just need to see what I gotta do >.> to get er dun

I would drill it or pay someone to drill it if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself. You can make your own sump and still use your hob filter until you are ready to upgrade. We did the same thing with my wife's new sump. I made the sump out of a new 30 gallon tank the first baffle I made 12" just for the hob skimmer we already had. I made the bubble trap far enough away so if we ever decide to go to an in sump skimmer we will just remove the 12" baffle and still have room for an in sump model. The Eshopps 100 has always pulled so much crap out we don't plan on upgrading any time soon though. Here is a picture of the sump in action. they are super easy to make.
