Charlie, I know I'm going to get some hate mail for this, but I firmly believe in vacuuming the sand . . . nutrient exportation. And, it's not crushed coral, it's way smaller than that. I do it on occasion in my 36 and I can't believe how much junk comes out of there. That can't be good if left in there. For me, the sand just makes it look like a finished tank, but builds up too much crud beyond that and requires maintenance.

Oh, and thanks for coming over to check out the new tank! Glad you liked lunch. Yeah, it's 5° here tonight, brrrrr! Nice pic of the little guy!

with that amount in there, I was thinking it is almost like bare bottom Kim, I don't think you have a problem with vacuuming at all. let em send the hate mail, forward it to me, I am good at spam ;)

I need to come back over and get a full tank pic at night with no backlighting :)

Yeah, what I have in there is like the bare minimum so the bottom is covered in sand. I only vacuum sections at a time, and I save the critters that come out of there and put them back in. BTW, I found some absolutely enormous brittle stars in the 36 when I moved a rock around yesterday. Cool! Very mature critters.

OMGosh I couldnt handle 5 degrees. tooooo darn cold.

I vacuum my sand too. I have the fine sand in my 90. my fish rearrange the depth on it all the time in different places. Theres next to no sand in one corner and the other corner is 2" deep. I siphon as much of the sand bed that I can get to. A shallow sandbed is fine to do that.

Thanx for the input :). See Kim, other folks do it to.........................lol.

That is a cool thing about the brittle stars too.

Have you thought maybe about directing some flow down towards the bottom of the tank? Maybe the extra flow could help you out in getting stuff into the water column and out of the display.

The high temp tomorrow is supposed to be 5................... maybe. I think I am gonna stay inside and clean the glass on mine................lol.

not to change the subject, but you all try to keep warm out there. I hear reports of a low of minus 30 and a high of minus 6 thru at least saturday.

I don't know about Kim, but my plan is to stay warm, take pics of my tank, and then post em in my thread. Sorry Kim about that shameless post :).

Thanx, we will try over here, if you stay outta the wind that is the big thing!!!!!!

Now............................ back to our regularly scheduled programming..............................LOL.

Looking great Kim! I hope to have some water up and running sometime this month... :high5:

Yay Devon! I can't wait to see it! But, take your time . . . Rome wasn't built in a day . . . yada yada. :)

I just put my torch frag in this afternoon after getting it all cleaned up and remounted. These lights make everything look freaky and awesome. I also discovered, now that I can view it from another angle, that it grew into four mouths from the one I had. Double awesome!

Yeah, and this should be my siggy "Obviously my tank is more complicated than even Rome . . . " Everybody is still shocked there's water in it.

I just took it not too long ago, and the lights are pretty low so it was crazy blue. It's pretty much confirmed for me that this is going to be an LPS dominated tank.

Hey Kim, I might be picking up a hammer in Spokane this weekend. Let me give it the old eyeball and I will get a pic for you. I love those lights, after seeing what they, they are really cool. Glad you got the hair off the torch, glad that worked

hi Kim, that hammer looks great in the blue light. that pic really makes me miss my corals...... any new full tank shots?

The torch is doing great, and is coloring up nicely under the LEDs. I was wanting to transfer more corals, but went through a bit of a diatom bloom recently so held off awhile. I also tested PO4 at .08 so decided to change out the GFO, and went with the new HC stuff . . . half as much needed and can regenerate it too. I tested PO4 again, and for the first time it's reading absolute 0.0 and the diatoms are going away big time. Expensive stuff, but the HC GFO looks like it performs very well. I also really like the reactor type setup, really easy.

So, today I went for the green monti cap transfer hoping that I would wind up with a decent sized chunk. You just never know when busting corals off. I took a picture of it in place for a nice reminder if the process went sideways. I have so precious few corals, and even less that are even interesting, so this was a big deal to me. I really like this one.

Here it is in the dip / bath for pests . . . check it out Rob - 5" across! That's the little plating coral you gave me! The color is pretty dull though.

In the new tank. The other smaller chunk is in there too. It's just resting here for now until permanent placement. I can't wait to see how it changes under the LED lights.
