this is not my tank, but i have one like it, and iam using pc lighting that sets about 4-5'' above the tank, what would be a good upgrade for this type of tank? mostly live rock, a few shrooms, small tang. oh if this is a pic of your tank and dont want me to use pls let me know....

If it were me personally, I'd probably go with a "low" powered halide over the tank unless you plan to go with more light demanding corals later, then I'd go with a higher powered halide. The reason I say low powered (wattage) is because as it stands, your marine life doesn't require all that much intense lighting, but it would be nice to have a halide over the tank for a nice shimmer effect and also give you more options on color selection where bulb temperature is concerned. You can always go with T-5's as well, however I've never used them so can't really comment there :)

hey thanks for the reply, for the shape of the tank, and not wanting a light into the room, what would you think as far as a setup, do i need a canopy?

Depends, but when I had my aquapod, I didn't have a canopy and the light didn't brighten up the room that much. ALso, helped keep the tank cool. I had the Current USA 70w HQI halide then went to a 150W (both were fixtures). :)

i was thinking about the ones that look like pc lighting,in how the setup is on four legs,,with bilbs and mh...

That's what I had. It came with the halide, 12 moonlights, legs and hanging kit to either sit it on the tank or hang the fixture and also a fan. Here are a few pics :)

No man...You should be fine. It all depends on what wattage you go to, you may have to raise the lights a bit in the beginning to acclimate the corals, but other than that, you'll be cool. People swap from pc's all the time to halides...Myself included :)

BTW, I picked up those lights from Premium Aquatics which is in your neck of the woods :)

about 30min:) how long do the halides last?

Halides add a unique "glimmer" to any tank.
I used to run PC's but the light was so boring to see. I bet if you add a halide lamp you you would see a much better viewing experience.

They bulb that comes with that fixture is a 12K if i remember correctly (could be wrong though). It has a nice slight blue tint to it in any event. If you want something really blue, you don't need actinics to accomplish it. Just get a 14K bulb or even higher. That will get in blue :)

Then that will be a cool choice. Sometimes I just use to turn on the moonlights for a different effect. It has 6 blue leds on one switch and 6 white on another. Realy cool fixture although there are tons of others out there. :)

Not bad...Can't remember what I paid for the 150w back then. My tank came with the 70w HQI, but I upgraded it to the 150w. Rob left Premium Aquatics so that sucks for when I have to order again when I get back into it :p
