Live Rock question

Hello,

I hope this doesn't sound toooo stupid but...here goes...smile.

I was wondering what the difference is between cured and uncured live rock? What are the benefits of each? any bad things and can you put either straight into the system?

Hello Bob,
The curing process used to "cure" live rock removes dying or dead material and creatures from the surface and pores of the rock. There are many methods used to do this. The living creatures within the rock are usually unharmed during the process and will emerge from the rock with time. I've had rock in my tank for years and still discover creatures emerging. That's the great thing about Live Rock. It's like Forest Gump says about life. "It's like a box of chocolates...you never know what you might get" If the rock isn't cured properly, it'll smell rancid. This is from the dead or dying substances decomposing in/on the rock. When purchasing live rock; make sure it doesn't stink. If you order rock over the internet or through mail order; ask how the rock is cured or purchase it from a reputable company. I would never place uncured rock in an existing system.

Even cured rock you buy needs to be held in a seperate tank for at least a few weeks before addition to your tank. test the water in the holding tank untill it shows no ammonia and no nitrite for at least a week.
