anyone know why my macro algae Chaeto is not growing well ?

there's a thin chocola color layer on the top of my Chaeto algae in my refugium. is this layer blocked the light that stopping the algae grow ? please let me know.

The Marine Depot sold me a 15 inches long led light.

that light should be just fine. I have T5 over mine right now, but I got a marineland LED light I am going to try on it. I had an LED on one of my other tanks and it grew cheato like crazy.

tank size
you running a sump and refugium?
what kind of skimmer?
what do you have for livestock?
how often do you do water changes?

You mentioned you had a thin layer of something dark across the top. It almost sounds like you might have cyano bacteria outbreak on the top. what kind of flow do you have in the refugium?

I agree with Lorrie..you have some type of cyano bacteria in the fuge...

can be caused by lack of flow, high nutrients, or poor lighting..

Good morning. I have 210 gl tank, and 55gl refugium tank with out side pump. my SWC skimmer can take two gl out in 24 hrs. I have different kind of corals, sps, and soft. there are about 7 fishes. i use UFO 9w led lights, three of them. Yes, the tank had Cyano bacterial couple time before, and I use Blue life Redcyano product to treat, and it's gone in the tank. I wonder the Cyano bacterial is still in the refugium tank. Do you think I need bigger pump to increase the water flowing? Thanks for suggession.

I use a light bulb that is a full spectrum bulb I got in the garden dept at Home Depot and a light fixture that I bought in the shop lighting area of HD It clamps onto the edge of the top of the fuge pointed at the chaeto. Total investment, $24.00. I have been using this for 3 years and the chaeto grows like crazy.

Well, I am far from being an expert but I am on a tight budget so I can't afford the high priced stuff. I just figured, what I am trying to grow is a plant so I went to the plant department and got something that will grow plants. That is what I came up with and it works great. You are welcome and I hope it works for you and it sounds like it is.
