Making a tidial pool

Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

I have 300 sheets of 8 foot by 3 foot 2 inch foam, and I was going to use cement. what type of cement would i use? I want it on the ground so that kids can see in it when they come to the shop

Well while I don't really have any suggestions, can you document your tidal pool on this forum? sounds pretty cool

Here are some shot of what I have done so far. I am making a smaller one to see if it works first. And yes we just moved a few months ago ie the boxes

This will be a neat thread to follow.

Are you going to have a surge device on the tidal pool? Would be pretty cool to hear the surge and watch the effects of the pool.

Also something weird popped into my head when I saw the form. Since it will be on the floor for people to look into I'd be worried about the wishing well effect it may have. I can just pictue little kids throwing pennies in the pool and making a wish. Ack!

Going to keep an eye on this thread cause it looks to be a fun one!

Right now I am thinking of a surge device will be the only water movement, but then I think it might not be enough. so if anyone has an Idea im open

it is all ready for a coat of glass, Should have it glassed and textured by tomorrow night.

well see what i do for a return and an overflow.
The return is going to be only around a 800gph pump for a slow flow I am going to try to do a surge every 2 min. I am looking for any advice on the surge because every thing will be at the same level or under it.

I am going to try to have the surge low in the tank. What do you think? the bottom is sanded so that there is a curve in it that follows the cut on top. I have a little more work to do before I glass,

right around 18 inches but I figure 14 inches then the surge and it would go to 16 of water. there are going to be 2 1/16th inch lines 1 1/2 inches under the return so the water level will go under the overflow then the surge and you will be back up to normal and so on. Think it will work, I guess we'll see. Oh ya it is 8' 1/4" feet long and 3' 1/2" feet wide. at the bottom it is 12 inches at the little kick out then back to 18. I am going to take video when I get it up and will run it on the site via converting it to flash.

Thanks Steve, looking forward to seeing it. What are your plans for lighting? I would think pendants, but how many and how high are you going to run them?

Neat project Steve, Sure this isnt a soaking tub for your foot, lol.
You plan is neat, a carlsen surge surge be very effective for the surge you are looking for. I am not sure wat you are looking for in regards to biotope but a anenome/sea pen would be perfect for this. the a few asocciated fis and so would be a great look. For lighting maybe take a peek some kind of lightng rai. that way you keep the to open for folks to look down into.

keep the pics coming

OK, thinking out of the box again. why use an overflow system? if you make the surge holding tank large enough you can use this as your sump. instead of emptying the entire surge device leave several inches, this can be used to feed the skimmer. you can also put a heater in there. the only thing in the tital pool would be the pump to feed the surge device.

am i making sense?

Ok I like the new Idea, How am I going to set the surge up, I am putting the glassing on hold till I figure it out. Might take a trip to the shed and look at what they did.
