May need some help!!

Hey all!!

My power has been out since last night around 6:00pm. I am at work right now and the temp of my tank was at 73° at 7:30 this morning. I may need someone with some tank or sump space to hold my corals until this passes. if the power comes on within a few hours i think i will be O.K.

oh well.....it's now 12:30pm and i found out my power is still out! I will go home and check the damage. I have wrapped the with styrofoam and a blanket so i hope that has kept it warm enuf.

yeah i was watching the news today in the morning and some places are not gonna have power for a couple of days so i hope that's not your case.... do you have any plans on what you're planning to do if the lights don't come on in a few more hours?

I'd definately be looking at a battery powered air pump to put in there and get some water circulation going on. Even if it's just a few bubblers, it'll keep circulation going. As long as your home is pretty well insulated and the temps don't really drop, I think your water temp will stay warm enough. If it's a short term cooling, I think your livestock will handle it alright. You might see if you have any friends with kerosene space heaters. It's a bit smelly but much safer indoors than propane! Keeping the tank wrapped up, as you have, will certainly help as well. I would recommend no feeding at all, for a couple reasons. You don't want to unwrap the tank more than needed and the cooling will slow down metabolisms....they won't eat as much, nor will they need food as much.

I hear ya. I borrowed a 3kVA UPS from work that ran my nano-stream and a small heater for 4 hours, but my tank has been without heating or circulation at all for 12 hours now. Getting a generator in about 2 hours, but I think things might be a lost cause.

I'm happy to report that it looks as if all of his livestock will pull through. I went over there at about 9pm and helped him rescue everything living in his tank, all are residing in my sump now and looking pretty good. Things didn't look so good when I got there last pm though, everything was on its side and looking a bit rough. However, they all quickly recovered with a slow warming and doing some cup fills to get some O2 in there bags. Once in the sump everything looked pretty good xcept the sixline he was looking pretty gone until this evening. As for the corals that remains to be seen, but or now they all look good. Glad I could help out, check your pm Willie, you left my card so I know you don't have my number.

What did the low temp reach? I was out of power for 23 hours, I dropped tank temp 80deg to 62 deg (until my neighbor graciously loaned us a generator.......guess that's going on my X-mas list). Everything has perked back up except one anemone that moved to the back of the tank and has remained low key. My sixline showed no ill effects whatsoever. Are they normally sensitive?

He only had a regular thermometer but it was in the 50's when I got there last pm. From what I understand it is the lack of oxygen that is the most dangerous. When we got the fish into containers and started pouring water from cups into the containers the fish were already responding. Don't know sixlines to be anymore sensitive than others when it comes this type of problem (no O2 and very low temp).

His sixline was in his sump without any cover/wrap, the main tank was covered so it was probably a little warmer though not much. The outside temp was at about 40 last night when I got there. His tank was without power for probably about 27hrs.

Ouch!!!!

I lucked out a little bit in the fact that I have four very wonderful kids. I set out a couple of turkey basters and told the kids that anyone that walked by the tank (including me and hubby) had to pick up the turkey baster and do 10 shots in the water. I have no idea if that helped or not, but the tank got basted on and off for 24hrs!

I'm sure it actually helped immensely, lack of oxygen is a killer for fish. Even basting like you did probably helped a lot.

Willie, make sure you turn your return pump off (unplug it) we took enough water out that it will probably go dry when the power comes back on...heater as well. Hope you get this message in time. Give me a call when you see these messages.

Well as you all heard Tod came to my rescue! My power was out from Thursday night to sunday night and the tank dropped into the 40's!!! After the power came back on the tank smelled pretty awlful so i changed about 50%+ of the water cleaned the skimmer ran some carbon and filter sock. I had a small bit of ammonia but it went away the first day. I will wait a week to see if it has fully cycled.

To my surprise, last night while adjusting the skimmer i noticed a peppermint shrimp alive and well! An amazing little dude....gotta give him a name for that! Just haven't decided what yet.

Todd, though there are a few bad seeds out there that make the world look unfriendly, it is full of good people and you surely are one of the best of the best.
With all the sadness over lost tanks and dead fish, this thread put a smile on my face as it probably did all others. BRAVO!!!!!
