How fast does this grow? I can get small 1" inch frags but I don't want something that takes 5 years to look like one. Thanks in advance.

Jerry

IME, M. Cappricornis grows much faster than digitada, but over all the Montiporas are the fastest growing SPS. Assuming everything is equal and your system is stable, a one inch fragment will double in 4-6 months. You'll find that after a year and a half or so, it will explode in growth to the point that it may be analogized to the xenia of SPS. Great coral.

What I really love to do is get 3 different M. Capricornis colors (Purple, Orange and Green) and layer them using epoxy. The bottom base should be bigger than the middle, while the top could be the same size as the middle or a little slower. They will grow into a spectacular centerpiece coral!

In case you don't know, be very careful to look at the undersurface and edge of the coral for montipora eating nudibranchs. They look like white stringy pieces of rice. You can sometimes see a trail of undersurface that has a slight decrease in density of zooxanthellae. If these are not found, they can descimate your montipora collections.

Post pictures!

montis are awesome and yes it can take a few months to grow :).

this is mine after 5 months i believe :).

the plates are what grew

I grew this monti. from the size of a silver dollar about 5 mos ago. This pic. was taken six weeks ago. It since has grown another couple inches at least. Lacks about a 1/2" before it touches the front glass. Frags anyone:D

Here's one of today, six weeks after the one I posted above

I have an orange montipora that I can literally see daily new growth. My other montipora's also are growing as fast, last but not least, my rainbow monti. I have had less than 2 weeks has encrusted the plug it came on. Thats also what my other encrusting montiporas are showing as far as growth goes.

Yippeee.....

From what I understand, Montipora is the fastest growing SPS coral in nature. Contributing more to reef building than any other coral, including Acros...because of it's fast growth. I have 2 Monti Caps that were under PC lighting and I noticed a small amount of growth in the few weeks I had them in that tank. They've been in my new 75, under T5 lighting and I'm seeing a small growth change EVERY DAY!!! I'm also seeing the same growth in my Monti Digitata too.

isn't that just so cool?? I love it when these corals do good and show just what they can do. They are such a cool coral and when grown into the full plating ability they have, they are an awesome stoney coral.

Reefer Patt, so none of that coral made it's way to Houston eh????? LOL..

This is about a year and a half of growth. The frag started from a one inch frag. I know that it is hard to determine size but it is about 14 inches across and about 5 -6 inches high.

I have since gotten rid of it because of real estate issues. I changed my mind and have started over with another Monti:badgrin:

I ask Sue, but you said you already had some. Since changing to the Reeflux bulb it is starting to change color from brown to green with the purple rim. Next time, Maybe sooner. I can't clean the glass where it's at. To close.

Here's one of mine. It's about 30" across and about 24" tall with 9 levels. It started out as a quarter size frag :) The frags gererated by this colony would make 15 or so colonies about the same size

Kevin

In this shot you can see the Montipora digitata orange (behind the Copperband) and the purple (on the overflow). It's growth rate is about 1"-1.25" a month.

His tank at home is a 550. I have witnessed this monster a bunch, it is a beautiful tank. At one time, alot of the corals in his tank were the mother to all of mine.
It is indeed a beautiful tank!!!

Kevin, it's too bad that coral won't grow for you. LOL.. OMG, now I've seen everything.

Robert, you know to never listen to me. J/K... I think I do have one.
