that one looks like a creeping kind, mine is more kelp like in that it roots in a spot, if you break it the little pieces go root in another place, modding pictures now

here's the algae compared to a dime, the entire plant thing isn't as big as the ones in the last pictures but should give a good size comparison

So do these root in a spot. Plants in small clumps, to 4 cm high, red to tan, branching mainly from the base. Branches .5 mm dia and 2-3 mm long. holdfast disc like. Often in turfs or mixed. Attached to carbonate rocks, rubble, Pacifc and Atlantic. The pic in by book is like a bush, kinda like you first pic only you have allot of bushes.

ya, i agree, those other pictures make the obtussa or what not look very different from mine, my greater question is, what fish eats laurencia in general?

Maybe tomorrow I will llook into that. My fingers are sorry right now  I was suppose to clean my house today, to late now :D Needed an excuse

o, just a thought as to orgin, my live rock is from fiji, and i got a piece of tonga sort of branch, so i'm geussing indo pacific since that's where most of my stuff is from

Every book seems to lead me to Laurencia sp, decumbens, filiformis. To me the closest is L decumbens. See what you get.

Marine

Those are really good pics, to bad you did not put in a scale, like a dime or nickle.

edit Nikki;
Just saw your post, can't be those, not structured growing right

Thanks, Boomer....I'm trying . At least I had it in the correct Phylum :D lolol

hey Andrew you know how those lil rocks with the star polyps were covered in that algae, well I jsut placed it in my tank the algae grew then it started to disappear and I started watching it and you will never guess who was over chomping on it one day...

My citrus clown goby was over there just eating it all up so that is all I wanted to tell you so that may help he loves the stuff.

sounds awesome, i haven't been that excited in a while... well perhaps but this is great, i am tempted to pick one up today...
anything i should know about caring for them, i don't have any sps that it'd kill at this point i don't think, cause the fish would be bigger than the sps and wouldn't bother it i don't think, all i have is two clowns in terms of fish and then softies, thanks for the tip
o and btw just pm for when you want to come and pick up some fire and ice zoas, unless they're doing better now and what not, just let me know

Well I have one they are suposed to be carnavores only I heard but he was chomping away on it, he loves chilling in my Zoanthids, he lays on my sps and doesn't bother mine. Lives with my softies, pair of true percs, green clown goby, 2 green blue chromis, orange lined chromis and fairy wrasse
oh yeah and he loves laying on my corcea clam

JR
p.s. this is no garentee yours will eat your algae but mine does
