Got board, so started this little project. I'll build a base and hood this winter.

ROFL!!! Trying to grow macros huh?:p I checked all-glass' website and the dimensions are 12x6x8 on the 2.5 gal so a 400w MH should works nicely!:D

Thats a 130w of cf, was on a 20. I was thinking a 70w DE mh.

I bought two JBJ K-2 Viper 70watt lights for my 20.
One has worked perfectly and the other doesn't.
The company is going to send a new ballast, but I have to pay for shipping back and forth.
So I don't think I could recommend this one.

That's the same price I paid for the JBJ's.
I really like the 14k light.
Were you thinking 10k over something like the 14k or 20k?

Don I saw your post for Pico sized fish thread!

Don I saw your post for Pico sized fish I wanted to throw out a masked gobies check them out I got mine back in the day from reeftopia. They will stay out in the water colume and were very easy too get to eat prepaired foods I still have a pair after 2 1/2 years that frequently spawn they are about 3/4" long and they do school and get along great peacefull fish Perfect for a Pico...Jeff

I would get the 20k bulb. I'm going to build a rosewood or bubinga light fixture and base so the retro kit would be easy.

I think tiny tanks look funny without sand, but I think I used the wrong kind. Hopefully it will settle or maybe some more rock will help. Should I let this thing cycle just like a regular tank?
I put a fitting in the bottom of the little filter and ran the hose down to my big tanks sump with a power head on the end. Then put two floats in the pico 1/4" apart as a latch. So that 1/2" of the pico's water drains down the hose through the powerhead then the pump turns back on and refills the pico. It cycles about every 5 minutes. Equates to about 20oz water change every 5 minutes. Kept the temp stable all night so it should be maintenance free.:)

I was waiting to hear how you were planning on automating this little Pico tank of yours! :D

I dont think I would have tried it without this sort of set-up. If I figured it right it should get 3 or more 100% water changes per day so no need for a ato, heater or anything else.
Had to do somthing with all the spare parts.:)

Now... if only you could figure out a way to run those pipes from my home to my office, so I could have a auto-maintained little nano here at work... life would be good! ;)

I hear ya. I thought about putting it in my office but cant justify the work. Ive seen alot of pico's but most are very short lived being stand alone.

After posting this morning Ive received a dozen emails asking for a source for my latching relays.
I dont use ready made latching relays. I use standard run of the mill dptd $3 relays to make a latching circut. It takes 2 relays and a extra single jumper wire to do this. I'll make a simple diagram later when I get time in a different thread.

Thanks
Don

Hey Don, with this little tank being plumbed into your big tank (if I read that correctly), I doubt the thing really needs to cycle. With that little bit of live rock you have in there, if it produces any sort of ammonia, nitrite or nitrate, I would think your mature 110 gal tank would make quick work of it. Just a thought...:)
