I am cross posting this from a killifish list... Apologies for not getting permission from the author to David, hope you don't mind :) This guy definitely knows what he is talking about, he's a pro:

"If anyone is ever looking for a good temperature controller (read industrial
strength) try looking for a RANCO temperature controller on EBay. You can
get them for as little as $20 and will run up to 16 amps at 120 volt.

I just bought several for an experiment for work and brand new they're $60
at Grainger.com. These and the ones on EBay usually don't have their high
voltage cords but a cheap $5 outdoor extension cord cut in half is easily
wired in as the supply and controlled outlet.

They are very easy to set, highly accurate and have variable set points.
This allows you turn them on at 73F and turn off at 76F for example so your
heaters aren't clicking on and off. The set points can be as far as 30
degrees apart and you can toggle between F and C.

Be careful on which Ranco model you get! These models have the 120 Volt input/output:

ETC111000
ETC141000
ETC211000
ETC241000

The other models will have an output of 0-10 volts and not the 120 volts input/output voltage needed to power the heaters, fans or chillers. If you get a different model, you may have to purchase transformers to do the 120 volt power switching.

thank you beakerbob, i'm planning on buying it this weekend so we'll see what they got at the fish store otherwise i'll order on line :) .
