Need Advice On Quarantine Tank!

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

My apologized for not checking back any sooner!I have been pre-occupied with a handful of choirs in preparation for our home transfer and equipment needed for my tanks. However I have not neglected taking care of my Sohal Tang which just now I have decided to name "PATIENCE".This is to remind me of what is needed to get him back in shape. It is almost a month now since I bought Patience I wonder when I can get him out of the QT and into my display tank. But again not yet! Just recently after a day or two of his lesions healing another one came up.This time it healed as fast as as it appeared. All I'm putting in the tank right now is the PARA-Guard and vitamins in the food. I wonder if I can use any of the medicines Boomer has mention by this time.( Neomycin, Minocycline, Kentamycin, Gentamicin, Terramycin or even Streptomycin) My goal now is to be confident that everything is ok with him before I let him join the rest of the gang. For now I still can observed a few small lump in his body but not the brown spots you see in the pics a potential problem. Any advice on how to go along with the medication this time. Thanks! Again "Patience"

In your QT tank do a 50 % water change and the hit the tank with Kentamycin @ 250 mg / gal every 3 days for 3 treatments (total 9 days), doing a 50 % water change after every treatment.

or

A 50 % water change and then Maracyn II at double the dose each day for 7 full days. If you chnage any of the water during this time it will make it more effective.

Just saw this thread tonight. You might want to try a combination (cocktail) of antibiotics; sometimes that's more effective in dealing with stubborn infections. By the looks of it your fish may have an outbreak of Pseudomonas or Aeromonas. I saw that Vibrio has also been mentioned. These unfortunately are also some of the hardest bacteria to treat, as resistance runs high with most medications. For Vibrio, Minocycline has some effectiveness; but Pseudo and Aero are almost completely immune. To treat them you can try (if you can find them) Piperacillin, Cefaclor, Gentamicin and sometimes Streptomycin. Often we find that we can't get those drugs, so we have to resort to using a combination of drugs available. You can try Minocycline and either Neomycin or Kanamycin together. These sometimes give it enough kick to beat it.

Oh, and about why Nitrofurazone is often recommended... Of all the common antibiotics available over the counter for fish, it breaks down the slowest in water. For susceptible bacteria it works the fastest because it stays in therapeutic strength better. It has absolutely no affect on Vibrio, Pseudo or Aero though.

Thanks a lot Boomer I was counting on your quick reply! I will get a hold of the medicine you suggested and administer it ASAP. I'll let you know of the development as I'm taking pics of the day to day occurence.

Clayton! Thanks for dropping by! I'll make a research of on Pseudomonas or Aeromonas as it is a new thing to me. I used to hear about the shot gun medication from our family doctor so this must work. I'll do the above recommedation by Boomer first and observed the development.

Hi Boomer!I can't find any of the drugs you mention above. If I find one they come in ointment form or for the case of streptomycin in vial form.I'm not sure if MYXAZIN could be a substitiute. It says it is for Fin Rot,Ulcers and other bacterial infections and it contains formaldehyde.I have seen Maracide but it is suggested that it is more effective with Maracyn II.Anymore substitutes! Thanks!!!

Myxazin contains formalin and possibly malachite green and have no idea of other ingredients - all ineffective from waht I hve been able to find out.

Maracide contains Malachite Green and Chitosa. The new stuff is contains Trisaminomethane, and Aniline Green. None of thes are very good for bacterial infections.

You have been usng PARA which is Malachite Green based. So they are all more or less about the same and not doing much.

Use the Nitrofurazone if that is all you can find.

Hi Boomer I just got Minocycline 100mg.Can you please tell me the correct dosage?Again many thanks for your assistance.I'll make available all the drug mention as available so I can have them for situations such as the I have now.

For Minocycline use 20mg per 10 gallons the first day, then 10mg per 10 gallons each day after that. Use for 5-7 days to be effective. Like I said, you can also use Kanamycin or Neomycin with it for a stronger punch.

Each tablet contains 10 mg. As I said above at double the dosage each day for 7 full days. The std dosage is two tablets 20mg / 10 gal / on first day, then 1 tablet, 10 mg / 10 gal/ day for the next 5 days. It should be used at double the dosage for a full 7 days. That is 2 tablets or 20 mg / 10 gal each and every day for full 7 days. If you do a water partial water change every day it will be more effective. This is the dosage we have all used for years

Just wondering and checking to make sure. You have 100mg Minocycline or you have 100 tablets ? Is it a single pill of 100 mg or what or 10 pills of 10 mg each. I need to know this. We would call std therapeutic dosage @ 20 mg / 10 gal, each day dor 7 days. I will assume it is a 100mg human pill or capsule which is the most common. You have a 10 gal Qt tank which about 9 gals net water, so a single 100mg pill is 5 x to much ( 100 / 20 = 5). If you cut the pill in half ( 50 / 20 = 2.5) that is still 2.5 x to much. A 1/4 pill is 1.25 x . So I would quarter the pill if it is 1 pill and treat every other day for 7 days and wish for the best. Don't due any water changes, as we want to lower its effectiveness/activity a little ...........and wish for the best.

DO NOT be adding other drugs or drugs together unless you get back to me. Many drugs have strong negative inter-reactions/effects yet some are synergistic ( increase effectiveness), so dosage rates need to be changed/lowered.

Finally have you tried the Nitrofurazon, yes or no ???

Wow!Very prompt response thanks a lot!I have 100mg capsule for human so I will follow the dosage. No I didn't try the nitrofurazone yet as I haven't given up on the drugs you suggested.Luckily this morning I found a pharmacy that has the monocycline capsule.I will do a final 50% H2O change tonight before I apply the 7day dosage.I will check back with you on the development.

As of today there are no brown discoloration on the skin. But there are two red spots located on the same place on both sides as shown in the pics. This came about yesterday. And one thing I keep forgetting to mention is the body scratching of Patience during swimming.

Again TNX!

Hey!!Clayton!! Thanks! Can't find Kanamycin yet and Neomycin I found is ointment.I'll let you know if this is available in my end.Bye for now!

" body scratching"

Is he breathing hard or normal ? He does look better. Look at him closely, is there is white mucous or coating on those areas. I ask this as there are two "ick" like diseases where the parasites are really small and often can't be seen. They often cause the fish to scratch, can cause the skin to cloud up, get brown even and cause red areas due to hemorrhaging These are very virulent diseases and death is usually in short when not treated. But it is possibe to have a very mild case. The are called;

Brooklynella (clown fish disease)
http://www.aquaculture.bz/fish-disease/Brooklynella.html

Amlyoodium ( Coral reef fish disease or velvet disease) this one is the most deadly
http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-07/sp/feature/

Based on what you have said and I have seen from the pics I do not think you have this. Bacterial infections can also cause fish to scratch sometimes

No difficulty of breathing! It has been like this since we started the medication. No white mucous or coating either.I just thought I'd mention it coz I haven't told you this before.Yes! he is getting better that's why I'm thinking of easing up the food a bit I might be over feeding him! It's been a while since I have seen those brown patches(Knock on wood).

Last night after the 50% water change I started minocycline(1/4 capsule hopefully he2) medication. No water change from here on till it is completed in 7 days.Again I can't thank you enough for the support.

Regards,
Joey

The morning after I dosed the tank with minocyline something appeared near the gills with a pinkish color.Attached is unedited pic to get the right coloration. However this appears to be subsiding the next day.

Here's a picture of the day after the appearance in the gills.the picture is under exposed but significant improvement in the two lesions is noticeable. However scratching still persist.I'll keep you posted on the development.

SkipperJ - I just wanted to say, Kudos to you, for the time you are taking with the fish in QT. It can't be easy with a fish so beautiful. What is your plan once it's free of all symptoms? Are you going to leave it in QT for another 4-6 weeks?

Hi Nikki!"Patience" is looking good! Today those above symptoms are slowly disappearing. I have thought about your question as well coz by the end of the month we are moving to a new place.I'm not sure if I'll be able to get a new tank in time but as soon as everything is well I'm moving him to his own 30gal tank for a moment.I have given away the last of my freshwater fishes to friends so when I'm done with the plumbing to make it reef ready he will be my first occupant.

I'm a QT convert now!Having a 2gal.+10gal and a 30gal QT tanks will be helpful. The only thing now is to arrange them nicely so it won't look like a clatter in the new house. Heyy! That 30 could be disguise as a FO for my wife as she always wanted to have those colorful angel fishes.Hmmm

Any suggestions on the next step!4-6 weeks I think will be a reasonable time.I only need to restrain myself buying new fish for that long.

Have a nice day!

Nikki!Isn't this cute?My friend in the LFS told me this is a good algae eater thats why I went out looking for it.Luckily I found a small one as this grows to a big size. A Naso Lopezi Tang is quite a peaceful fish towards its tankmates.Hopefully it will pass on QT without any problem otherwise Boomer will have another patient

You know I remember about what you did with your clam it took you a while too right?

Catch you around!
