Hey guys I'm helping my ex girl (well trying to win brownie points with) do a research paper on the awareness of global warming on the destruction of reefs around the world, and if I could find out what actually happens to the corals when the water temperature rises and what else causes their destruction and death it'd be greatly appreciated!!!!!

That was packed with alot of info, had to find a smaller link because she only needed a 4-5 min presentation

I am all for saving the planet and I hate to see the impact of man's overuse of the earth's resources. I don't want to sound really selfish, because I know it would be devastating...but I just have to say, living in Seattle...I could only imagine just a little bit of global warming. If it could only rain 200 days a year, that would be nice.

lol, I'm with you BC, we could use a little WARMING in here, thats for sure.

you know not to sound anti liberal, anti greenpeace, anti epa... but isn't it funny that the planets temperature last year was actually cooler than normal??? All of this global warming is about as convincing to me as the toyota Prius being enviromentally friendly. As stated earlier I am all for nature I am all for reducing our footprint but you know a 100 years ago we did not have the cars and such we do now and yet the temps were already on the rise its nature its going to go through cycles for some silly reason man seems to think that we have this huge ability to alter mother nature she will win every time... But then again its liek everything else in the news and the mainstream they don't want you to hear the whole story just the part that makes people rich and scare the rest, I read somthing the other day in a science magazine that the polar caps that everyone says is disapearing are actually growing on the opposite side of where they are and in fact more so, but I guess we caused the continents to divide and spread around the world from row boats back in the dark ages :) ok enough ranting sorry to derail...

Hello;

Warming causes bleaching and death on the reef --- (in a nutshell) --- just watched documentary.

Some scientists' research links Global Warming with a trigger for Cooling (Ice Age).

I just saw where lots of coral are adapting to the warming & they change also.

Sounds plausible Scooterman --- People run some Reef tanks pretty warm! :)

Before putting too much stock in the data presented in the link posted above "http://www.geocraft.com/WVFossils/ice_ages.html" do a web search on the author, Monte Hieb.

I have read and watched a lot of info on global warming but by no means am I an expert. All my comments here are merely my own opinions. I feel the planet has been going through warming and cooling periods since it was formed and will continue to do so, with or without mans influence. Still I feel we should do all we can to live in harmony with nature and leave as little of a footprint as possible.

As far as the coral reefs go I think there is evidence that the recent warming of the oceans (manmade or not) and other factors are effecting the existing coral reefs, but I do not feel that reefs will cease to exist, rather they will move to areas that are more favorable. The coral is an adaptable, mobile organism. It reproduces in more than one way which gives it the ability to adapt/move. While a particular reef may be devastated by either man or nature, those corals when they were thriving were likely spawning regularly. When a coral spawns it puts its genetic material into the water column and ocean currents can carry it to who knows where. If conditions are favorable in the new area the coral may grow.

I feel if the oceans continue to warm we will just see the reefs move out from what are now the favorable areas near the equator. Who knows maybe someday we will have a great barrier reef off of the Washington coast.

On a side note the western Washington area could use a little of that global warming this spring! Here it is almost June and I still need a sweatshirt and jacket outside! Brrr . . .
