I got some of this too, I think. Its been growing since I put my T-5s in on Friday. Nitrates are around 2-5ppm. I don't have a way to test for P but I use RC salt and distilled water (except the initial 55gal was declorinated tap) Would this be enough to feed the cyno for much longer? My LR should be done curing Friday-ish. Should I wait till then and fight it with the LR or use some denitrate and phosban?

my Nitrates are at o i was told to add maracyn by the lfs it is reef safe that's what he told me????

Not sure about the Maracyn, It's bacteria treatment used to treat fish. Not sure what it would do to a reef tank.

I'm using some Maracyn II to treat my of my daughters Gold Fish for a bacteria infection.

What are you testing with to read 0 Nitrates, what about Nitrites?
Actually cyno. is easily sucked out & is a very great exporter. Vacuum, & keep up with your wc's. If the problem continues, look at Flow & Lighting you should have around 30 to 60 times turnover in a Reef Tank, FO you can do with less.

I used E-M (Erythromycin) it is one tablet for 10 gallons and I have a 50 gallon system I used 3 tablets (My tank is a reef) make sure to remove carbon

kept skimmer off for 3 days and did a water change day 2 and day four
also day four turn skimmer back on and put new carbon in

and mine was cleaned up

i am using maracyn 1 and 2 right now....why are you wanting to use it????i don't know if it is "reef safe" or not, but i would never use any medications in my display(even if the company claims it is reef safe)

Treating with meds isn't removing the problem, resolve this & use the cyno as an export, it will work.

what i'd do is a nice water change, siphon as much as you can and just add more flow to the tank ..... just my opinion :p.

how much flow do you have in the tank?
sometimes you think you got plenty until you relize you don't like me :p .

i did a wc today and add a power head i hope it will fix it

Sounds good...I wish you the best. Don't feel too bad if it comes back. Just keep at it and make sure to continue using ro/di water. They way I personally "beat" it or prevented it from growing in my main display was to put a light over my sump in what was supposed to be my fuge section that was more watts per gal and was on for more hours a day on an alternate photoperiod from the tank and where the conditions were more suited for it to grow there, it did and not in the main display. So every couple of days, I would siphon it all out and as time progressed, it grew less and less and my vaccuming was pushed back to every week, then every 2 until eventually it stopped growing all together. I'd say I had some of it growing in my fuge for about 2 months atleast if not more until it was all gone. I didn't mind it so much because I didn't have to look at it in my main display and so I used it at my advantage to export nutrients from my sump:)

Here's a few pictures that may help you understand what I meant. Take a good look at my sump under the light! I would get that crap non-stop until it eventually subsided. I just vaccumed it out like I said as it grew. The second pic is harder to see because the light was off for that pic but you can see how thick the cyno was from how dark it is in that chamber under the light!

And this one shows how I had everything incorporated in together under my old 75gal. Now that i have changed over to the cube, I don't even run a light at all over my sump. I don't get cyno anywhere and not even any diatoms seeing the tank had been cycled. This was my sump of course after a good cleaning:)

It is Cyno Bacteria. You need to use straight erythromycin. put one pill per 25 gallons .Turn off your skimmer and let med run for 2 days .Then do a 25 % water change add carbon .When you turn your skimmer on it may over skim just watch it for a couple of days

Meds are cool  but they don't solve an obvious issue. If the tank continues in the same direction after treatment and you don't get to the root of the problem, you'll be dosing medication forever which isn't good. Alot of people tend to leave meds as a last resort. Yeah, it takes longer without using medication, but who said this hobby didn't require a bit of patience. All a part of cycling in most cases where a balance needs to be achieved. Just a thought:)

i agree with my buddy Krish.
Sometimes meds fix one thing and screw up anoter thing.....good luck if you use it:).

I would normaly feel the same but I have been using meds sparingling in reef for 10 + years .It kills the cyno cause it is both a Bacteria and Algae. I works quite well. you are not using it as a medication dose just enough to kill the cyno.I have been doing reef tanks for 10 years and never had any problems using med to correct that problem.Cyno can be a bad problem if you do not get it under control. I have a R/O unit with a inline uv to kill any cyno that could make it past the membrain. Just trying to help.
