Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

Let me see if I can answer a few more questions.
so psas jump started reef frontiers yet they really don't have a long term stake in the site? this smells fishy, although i truly believe mike and chuck have good intentions.
The original PSAS forum was a one page site with info on the club. It then morphed into a PHP style board called PSAS.com in which we could close the forums at RC and TRT and put it in one place. At that point we got 53 local members and about the same ammount from out of state. this ran through until january. In january a lot of software upgrades, advertising, paying for the id gallery pics and so on was invested by myself and chuck we launced the new site as RF and had hopes to still promote the psas club and expand the board to members from all over the world. No costs or monies came from the club for this, in actuality thousands of dollars from RF were donated to the psas club in order to make it what it is. RF will still continue (as long as you want it) to host the psas club forum, promote the club and work hand in hand with it to raise money for the club to operate and be a great thing for its members.
I am not sure what smells fishy, so if you have a direct question please feel free to ask.
Not fishy just a couple of smart business men. Maybe some legal CYA
Well I can tell you that running RF, and taking in the advertising costs, and contest give aways and operating costs, then mixing in the ammount of time it takes to put it all together, Don I dont think you would think we were smart business men, lol. oh and what does CYA mean???lol
I recall when reef frontiers was announced at a PSAS mtg (Jon Warner mtg??) the voiced goal was to create a place that not only provided quality information and fun but ultimately can sponsor large events such as reefcentral. If you notice, reefcentral also has several clubs that use it to communicate club specific events ect..
Jay that was the goal of the psas and RF's will do what ever it can to play a big role in making that happen. The PSAS now however has a new set of Board members and I am not sure what exactly the plan is. but if its the same I know me and chuck will do everything we can to make that happen.
I guess since reef frontiers was began by PSAS members then the PSAS board decides where funding is used ect. If contributors would like to know the specifics then I would think it fair to provide those. I have complete confidence in all members and respect them in MANY ways. Lets help them through this transitional phase to bigger, better!
RF was started by chuck and myself. As per specific of contributions, let me see if I can be more specific.
Contributing members on RF, this would be the link on the front page. This money goes towards the operating costs of RF and not PSAS, in contributing you get more photo gallery space. I believe right now thier are five total members that have contributed, for a total of under 100 dollars. If some one donated thinking it was for PSAS please let me know and I will refund it right away.
Memebers dues, all the proceeds from this go to the PSAS club and are deposited in a PSAS club bank account held and run by the treasurer of the club, nothing to do with RF what so ever.
Any raffles, auctions, book selling, coral give aways or anything simular that the club has done of time again has nothing to do with the RF and all proceeds are deposited in the PSAS club account. I know the previous treasurer did a great job of accounting for and documenting all transactions, and it was also backed checked by another board member for safety sake.
As per me and chuck and RF. (I guess I am talking for ya Chuck, so smack me if I am wrong) We are both members of PSAS just like yourselves. We have sat on the board of the club from when thier were only 4 to 5 members and have donated a ton of time and money to make psas what it has been and what we hope it will be. We want to see the club continue towards what was its ultimate goal of a macna style event, so in saying that we will do what ever we can to help the club get thier, and that means using RF also to achieve this goal.

Anyway I hope this once again clears a few things up, if not let me know.

So, to make it simple for us simple folks or for us folks like me who hate a lot of details (just give me the answer):

A. If you want to sit on your butt and play with your computer here and find out stuff or torment Nikki about something it's Reef Frontiers

and

B. If you want to get off your butt and walk around doing fishy activities such as meetings, tank tours, holiday potlucks, etc it's PSAS.

I think I got it down.

Colleen

Mike: That's the page I was on. Thank you yet again for your time, effort, and vision for RF and PSAS.

Now that everyone is clear! RIGHT!? Let's talk about the RF site!

How about we as reef keepers attach relevent experiences with certain corals/fish ect to the pic library logs. I am always looking for the experience of others when I am looking to get new additions for my tank. It would be nice to see a pic with peoples comments and experinces readily available.

Well said Mike. I wanted to say that I appreciate the time and effort that everyone puts into this club to organize the events.

I would like to see a clam forum directed completely to the care of clams in a reef tank. Alot of people seem to think it is impossible to have clams but with a forum directed toward this it will give people some great info from members with experience, links, etc.
Just a thought!:)

Mike,

I give you guys alot of credit for keeping both PSAS and Reef Frontiers going. I would also assume that you are very aware of the bookkeeping requirements, along with all the tax responsibility of running an organization. Please dont take offense, thats all I meant by CYA.

I would love to see a "common problems/solutions" section that would cover things like Cyano blooms, ich, flatworms, ph spikes, tissue ressesion (both RTN and bleaching). I'm thinking a simple, problem solver for the newer folks and a good resource for those occasional stumpers. This could be added to as problems are solved/encountered. Even if the problem doesn't have a known solution, it would allow for documentation of what other people have tried to resolve the issue.

Just a thought.

LOL - I'm glad everyone likes to torment me so much.....my life would be so boring! :D

Ahhh CYA = Cover Your Ass (just to clarify)

GASP!!! I thought it meant something else....maybe an ultra abbreviation for cyano. Now when I look in the dictonary it says Slang (sometimes vulgar). ;)

Thanks Don I really didnt know what it meant, I guess my head is to screwed up with reefing abbr..
When I was on the board with PSAS I can tell you all the accounting was kept in tip top shape by Scott (grouperdog) and Paul M (mushroomboy) so no worries thier. As per RF, its all a legal company and firmly in the lap of CHuck, lol, I am just here to look good and talk to much.

Reed thanks for the idea I like it.

From an outsiders viewpoint.......

As stated before, I do not live in the WA area and cannot come to your PSAS meetings, tours and the like (although I would love to at some point), but I have considered, in the month I have visited here, of joining PSAS after reading about it, because I believe it is a well run organization from what I here from all of you, and most of all, you are all friends, always willing to help and have a good time.

Second, contributing to RF is another thought that has crossed my mind because I have visited several other sites and to be perfectly honest, I don't like them. They seem too big, unfriendly, crude by some posters; bottom line.....they just don't feel like the "family" you have here. Yes, I can find a few tid bits of info from time to time, but I always come back here.

Thirdly: If I did give money to either PSAS or RF or Both, would I really care exactly where the money was deposisted? NO! Both wonderful organizations, working together, for the same purpose with mostly the same folks. If it helps one organization, in the long run it will help the other. Hooray for Mike and Chuck for having the vision of putting it all together and why? Because they seem to love it, (reef keeping) and sharing their knowledge, whether in person at PSAS or on the RF site.

Keep it going guys, I have come to trust your opinions and am blown away by the technical jibberish you can spew (mojo), I am not uneducated, an Oncology RN, but boy you make my head spin sometimes........just another part of the sciences that I have not had time to study.

Bottom line, I would hate for a wonderful site like this to go away or go bad because a penney or two got in the wrong account.

O.K., I am done.........

My tank seems to be thriving because of the people here, I had very little, zero, zip, knowledge about the hobby 2 months ago.

A "FAQ" section would greatly help... A "HOW TO" section is also helpful. And also a section where you put past threads of "LETS TALK ABOUT"

Purpose is for people not to do a search anymore when the topic or thread has been long updated... but still very usefull for newbies and new members.

See if these help you:

Great Threads - the Let's Talk About threads can be found here

Working as a webmaster, I give sooooo much credit to Chuck/Mike for there work here. This is a very professional looking site and the information here is great. I contribute to both RF and PSAS as in my mind, they are totally different. Keep on going Mike/Chuck, soon this site will be one of the top ones out there!
