We're excited to announce that we now have some AMAZING ReefShapes rockwork in stock, made by Iron Orca Studios. You can read all about their rock on their website, Reefshapes.com.

Some excerpts from their site:

"MADE WITH ARAGONITE and CALCIUM CARBONATE found in real coral rock skeletons which aids in buffering the water. REEFshapes contain no concrete or elements that can be harmful to your valuable collection of sea life."

"REEFshapes™ substrates and habitats are made by Iron Orca Studios on Whidbey Island in Washington State. Iron Orca Studios specializes in creating habitats for world class zoos, museums, and aquariums throughout the United States. Owner Mark Van Wickler became curious about the special needs of coral life after being involved in creating artificial habitats for aquariums like the National Aquarium in Baltimore and Seike Sealife Habitat in Japan. You can find out more about us and our past work at www.ironorca.com."

What's it made of?

As David pointed out, they specify its made from a blend of Aragonite and calcium, but the exact formula is their secret.. But it doesn't contain porceline or concrete, which some other man-made rocks do... I highly recommend reading over both of their websites, lots of good info there.. They also have a video.

Also, we're going to be putting one of these rocks in the center of our display tank, so people can check these rocks out in action and see how they mature in a reef tank first hand.

Will these breakdown become brittle over time as it ages from the chemistry in our systems? Just like the aragonite and coral in substrate?

Prices vary because it is sold by the piece,
not per pound. Depending on the size of your aquarium you may need only one or two pieces.
Brie has posted pictures and she has the prices at Barrier Reef Aquariums.

but are they Malcolm McDowell apporvoved?
j/k. Saw these this weekend, pricey but look to be of pretty good quality.

Doesn't hurt to add something to ask our Santa's about. At least they can be wrapped in a package and not leak....lol..lol..lol

DBM reef....Any particular piece you like the look of? Easier to quote a price. Many folks might be sticker shocked when they see the price but when you think about how many pounds of live rock each piece replaces it is pretty much a wash. For example: A piece that would aquascape a 20-30 gallon tank is around $150. If you figure you would put 20-40lb of live rock in a similar tank you can see that the cost is pretty similar. Of course everyone decorates differently so this math may not apply;)

Example of a REEFshape made to fit a 14 gallon bio cube

REEFshapes are made to any shape or size and only one is needed to fill some of the more popular biocube sizes.
