I am in the market for a new skimmer and am thinking of moving away from reef octopus. I now have in my sights the 'Aqua Medic T.5000 Twin'!(rated for 1250gal). Is this rediculous overkill for my tank(190gal) or should i go for it? Any suggestions welcome, i am a huge fan of skimming!

just looked it up!
you getting the "shorty" or the tall?
BIG skimmer!
I "personally" don't think there is such a thing as "overskimming" in a reef tank!
But others will say diff..!

I have a MSX200 on my 29 gallon and love it. No such thing as over skimmer.... maybe under feeding, but not over skimming. SPS corals have bloomed since i put this thing into effect.

This is the skimmer i am currently using rated at 800lts and was thinking of doing the next size up rated for 1500lts. That would prob be enough for my tank and is also $1200 cheaper than the aqua medic. The reef octopus skimmers look very similar to the ones in the links you guys put up.

You can ship that thing straight to me when you replace it!! LOL
I would buy it from you and pay shipping?!?!
Let me know how much you want out of it and I might be able to get it from you if your gonna sell it!

no worries, might be quite a while til it is replaced but will let you know.

mkay, well first off, where are you at? nowhere in USA i guess from your tank specs... :)
wherever you are, DONT waste the funds on that t5000 shorty, or any AM skimmer for that matter...

for overskimming a 200g tank for cheap, the 2 sicce pump models of SWC skimmers, (both extreme and cone models) is going to totally outskim the AM t.5000, or just about anything aqua medic could throw at it for that matter...lol

were talking about 1800-2800 lph of air for less than 60 watts, a bubble plate to diffuse turbulence, air muffler and submerged wedge outlet for between $480-$720

then there's this sweet little skimmer for a little more cash, almost the same air, slightly more watts, but bigger body, bigger neck, better build quality, and i like the submerged 20 turn gate valve for an outlet.

all of these skimmers are overkill for a 200g unless you feed/stock like crazy, for sps quality water typically i would tell people that between 500-600 lph of air per 100g of tank is a good rule of thumb to follow. the trend to submerged outlets and mufflers means quiet operation, and mesh modded impellers provides you with smaller bubbles for more surface area/waste removal.

but thank god you want to make sure you overskim as opposed to wanting to put up with an octo dnw 200 on a 200g tank :) kudos to you!!

also, it looks like that skimmer is unmodified from the amount of bubbles in it...have you done the mesh mod or boared out the plumbing or modded the venturi on it?? if not your missing out on alot of power you could be enjoying in the mean time. :)

This interests me massively!!! How do i go about any of this???

I did the mesh mod thing on my sedra 9000 (ASM skimmer) back when I had it. I didn't save any pictures, but I found this thread that has some pictures.
The guy that did this mesh mod saved a few of the pins on his needlewheel impeller. I didn't do that. On my sicce pumps there isn't any pins left either, so I'm not sure there is any benefit.

here you go, here's a thread on the mods...
lemme know if you have any questions :)

Thanks,
the mod on the needlewheel looks easy but i'm sure i will fumble around and f@#% up my venturi intake. I don't mind giving it a go but would it be easier to just put a larger pump on it and would that have as good effect???

Are you able to give me a few more details on the venturi mod as i didn't follow that part too well(sorry for bein slow)??

Mesh mod looks easy enough. Anyone have any more links to enakamat (or however it's spelled) Ebay link is closed...
