new to all this

hi all....i am new to all this reef stuff....my brother is on the process of setting up a Reef tank.....he has the live rock...coral....all the filtres that open and shut actually...........his ultimate goal is to set up a complete tank like in Nemo.....so far he has 2 Damsels....2 clown fish.... a yellow Tang and 2 blue tangs ...my question is out of the following fish which are not community fish........clown fish, Penant Coral fish, Porcupine fish, sea star, royal Gamma, Yellow Tang, Four Striped Damsel and Pacific Cleaner shrimp..............

i know this is probably a silly question but we dont want him to put in fish who will hurt each other.....

If he is just setting up a ref tank, he will ne 4-8 weeks for the tank to cycle before he can put anything in.

Go slow, if you think things are moving you are not going slow enough. To rush things is to kill things and cost yourself alot of money and grief

You've got some pretty big fish there...What size tank is this? Tank size is a major factor when stocking a tank.. How long has this tank been set up?
Before deciding on a 'Nemo theme' you need to research each fish. While Clowns and Damsels are good begginer fish, I would never recommend a Hippo Tang to anyone just starting out. They are VERY prone to ick and other diseases. Unless your tank is huge, I wouldn't house 2 Hippo's together..They can reach 1' in length and often don't get along as well as adults.
I am not sure what a 'Penant Coral fish' is.. but if its the Moorish Idol, then leave this off your list..This fish are EXTREMLY difficult. Very few survive in captivity. IMO, they should be left in the ocean!
Porcupine Puffers are not reef safe, also need to consider tank size here.
If you already have one Yellow Tang, I wouldn't add another.
4 striped Damels grow to be terrors..You have two Damsels already, I'd leave this one off the list
Sea Star, Cleaner Shrimp and Royal Gramma are all fine choices.

Ok maybe blue/green chromis damsels but not the stripey ones and definatley not the blue devils.....

Welcome to RF dood ...i hope you like it here.
i believe the first thing you should tell us is, the size of this tank, what kind of filtration are we talking about in here? if this tank is gonna have corals you will need to think about what type of light too, what skimmer you're gonna run ( this is a important equipment for any fish tank).
i know the movie Nemo rocks ( that's how i got in the hobby :lol: ) BUT taking care of a fish tank is way different so you'll have to research about the fishes you like ( Steve-S is an awesome guy for that, so you could start a thread on his forum ) because it all depends on how big your tank is.
i know damsels are good for begginers but they can be a pain in the butt, they can be agresive to other fishes, yellow tangs and blue tangs can be together but i wouldn't recomend you getting them since you're just starting ( it'd be better for you to research about them because they require quite some knowledge).
Clown fishes and royal gammas are good .

hi as this tank isat my brothers house i will get all the things he has filtre protein skimmer etc and let you know...thanks for your input so far....i am trying to head off disaster here...as i know my brother all too well.....thanks again Jackie
