Hi all.
Just set up my first reef tank last week and looking for any advice you might have. Percula 90 tank, 150watt metal halide light, 20kilos of live rock, pre-mixed water and two green chromis. All my Ph, nitrites and nitrates are ok but I have to wait for the ammonia to settle down before I can add any critters. If I add another 20kg of rock will it cause problems with the water or not?
Cheers.

look like the first stages of new tank set up if you are going to add live rock now is the time. what kind of skimmer are you running ?

Welcome to Reef Frontiers!!!

If you add more live rock now (depending on if it is cured or uncured), then you may see another ammonia spike, which is fine, you just have to wait for the process/cycle to complete. If you do it later, you may encounter the same thing, so if you want more rock, IMO, now's the time. As Dave said above, more is better in the long run. Here is a link to a thread on the nitrogen cycle. Nitrogen Cycle Explained

Welcome, I am glad you are here, Keep coming back. This is a great place. If you could talk someone into holding your chromis for a couple of weeks, Now would be a great time to add more live rock. Hope you have a good day. Steve

Congratz on finding this discussion forum. People here are really helpful. People will always say, more rock the better and the longer you wait to add things the better.

I waited until my nitrates went to zero before adding anything that wasn't extremely hardy. Its the safest bet and shouldn't last too long, especially if you have lots of live rock and a skimmer. (The nitrogen cycle spikes ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates at different times.)

And that is because it is 100% true, I have paid dearly to learn to be paitent. I still have trouble with it. LOL the old but I WANT IT!!!! NOW!!!!! lol. I'm getting better and just dont want to see others do the same things that I did before I knew better. Now I have to watch for rationalizing or justification for my doing something stupid. LOL Hope it helps you in some way. Steve
