What is the material between the tank and the stand?
Looks black in color.

Plywood. I'm guessing. I painted plywood black for my obd tank to sit on.

I was thinking along those lines, but I have never seen any that is ridged enough for use under a tank.
I would like the black color for a near future project.

Can be purchased in any desired density. Think crate packing protection corners. Even the mid density stuff would be dimensionally stable under this relatively light load/sq ft

Where would one find this material.
I would be looking for a piece 72" x 30" x 1/2"

Would start with eBay to get specific names and specs, then go to google from there

I still curious to hear from OBD as to what exactly the material is that is directly under the tank.

Painted styrofoam?
Every time I've tried to paint Styrofoam it melts.

I'm inclined to agree, but before I would go out and buy some, I would want the endorsement of my tank builder.

I know mfinn and I chatted on R2R about the material I used under the tank. It is actually what OBD suggest I use under the tank. It is insulation foam purchased from home depot. It is the stuff with foil on one side and a thin plastic liner on the other. I tried painting the edges black with plasti-dip thinking it might not melt the Styrofoam. However it did melt it a little bit, but it doesn't look that bad. I might end up using a piece of 1/2'' trim wood to cover up the foam.
