Oceans by Design has developed a Signature line of filtration products using high quality American Cast Acrylic. We have created a complete filtration system that will be the last sump/filtration system you will ever need to buy. Our standard system, 45” x 16” x 16”, fits nicely in most standard cabinets, however Oceans by Design manufactures every piece of equipment so we can easily customize a system to fit into your existing cabinetry. Each piece of equipment has its place in the sump in the order that optimizes performance. Our fluidized pellet reactor feeds the protein skimmer; enabling bacterial flock to be exported. A dual carbon/GFO filter absorbs any remaining DOP, and finally our kalk reactor doses the system.
Nothing is more stressing on the budget than having to constantly upgrade equipment, either because it wasn’t good enough or cannot keep up with a larger system. Our professional series sump is designed to not only be plug and play, but also expandable. Our base system comes with the sump and the protein skimmer. All the additional components can be added piece by piece at a later time, as your budget dictates.

Using the science that governs the laws of protein skimming and blending it with construction that focusses on ease of use, we have created an effective and attractive high-end protein skimmer. Designed to withstand the test of time, our protein skimmer is a true set and forget piece of aquarium equipment, no need for the aquarist to “tweak” the gate valve, or adjust the water level in the sump. Our design brings water and air in independently, enabling our protein skimmer to hit the numbers for “contact time”, “dwell time” and “bombardment rate” that no other skimmer on the market can come close to.

OBD Protein Skimmer Features :

  • 10” crystal clear cast acrylic tube mixing chamber, with a 5 gallon capacity. Water is feed from an independent pump (maxi-jet 1200). Unlike venturi skimmers, where the pump does double duty by supplying the air as well, we have been able to achieve a 60 second dwell time in the mixing chamber to allow proteins to be mechanically stripped from the water molecule and then reattached to clean air bubbles
  • Air is supplied to the protein skimmer using the ultra-quiet (32db) Alita 40 air pump. The AL40 pumps out 40 lpm (85 scfh)
  • 2 x 6” kiln fired air diffusers. The micro-pores yield bubbles .09 micron in size. These air diffusers will not react to nutrients in the water and will last for years
  • We have utilized an oversized 10” collection cup to allow for more time between cleanings
  • The protein skimmer is plumbed with 1” clear pvc and sch 80 fittings. A 1” gate valve is used for precise control and ease of use
  • A stylish 3/8” black acrylic lid gives the protein skimmer a clean, polished, professional look

Very nice skimmer!!

I have seen this UP-CLOSE. I have seen it work!!!
It is a quality piece of equipment.
Will this skimmer be offered as an independent piece of equipment? Is it able to work in sumps other than the AIO design? Does it need to be placed in a sump to work?

Thanks Peppie,

Yes the Protein Skimmer can be purchased as a stand alone product, it comes complete pumps and air diffusers. It will work in any system, ours or otherwise. It can run as an external or external skimmer.

excellente!!!!!
so is there a smaller one??
2400lph of air injection is prolly a bit much for my system. :)
it looks just great..
imo, the only slightly jankey looking thing on it is the design of the logo..
i think u guys can do better than that, it looks like some LA gangster is getting into gear making...lulz
tell me its temporary... :)

oh, the other thing,
dont use the crappy new chinese made maxi-jet from marineland... its total shyte..
get the old italian made versions that are still produced by the company "cobalt"

Thank you skimmy for all your input. We are using the Italian made Maxi Jet's in all our products that require the use of a small utility pump.

thats awesome!!
i might have been mistaken but i thought that was a chinese one pictured.
i dont think the italian design has the contour line on the front of the powerhead.

the skimmer looks so top knotch... i cant wait to try a pro air stone skimmer..
are these made in america? made in china? and hand made or CNC milled??
can this skimmer be made in custom sizes out of different colored acrylic if i wished??
thanks for answering all my geeky skimmer Q's. :)

This looks awesome, especially since It's air stone skimmer, and the independent pump makes it a great touch. ? Do you guys fabricate special requests?

HTC EVO

Yes we make the units ourselves so we can make whatever you want. If you need different sizes we can most likely accommodate that. Our only requirement is that we have to know the end product will perform the way it its supposed to.

How tall is it? I see it has a 10" body, with a couple inches on one side for plumbing.
How much clearance to take the cup off?

I like the lid

Ahh.... So like a video update from the buyer, or you guys test it. Well either way, I'm going to eventually make the drive up there to visit, and meet ya.

I'm really thinking about a air driven skimmer.
My first ever skimmer I made myself in 1990 was air driven.
Had a old piston pump.

Our Protein skimmer is 25.75" tall, requires between .5" to .75" clearance to remove the collection cup.

Our supplier assures us that these are in fact made in Italy. I know there are issues with the supply of the Italian made units since Marine Land made the switch to the Chinese manufacturer.

We are purchasing Acrylic made in America, and we manufacture the units in Tukwila...(yeah I think that is America)
:peace:
The parts laser CNC cut.....SO YEAH....AMERICAN MADE AND PROUD

Colors: yes we can get different colored acrylic tube, and sheet acrylic. This acrylic is typically not cast, it is extruded.

Skimmie the skimmer parts are all (well 90%) milled by cnc and we assemble in our shop, so made in the PNW with local support. On the acrylic the supplier said that they could get different colored tube (cant remember the actual colors though) so its possible but not sure what they charge extra for it.

On the Lid you got to see it first, the logo is actually etched into the black lid and then painted, it looks pretty cool.

These Alita pumps are dead silent, I mean you have to touch it to make sure its working lol. The cool thing about the air stone is that you dont have to worry the little things that always drive folks crazy with the venturi style pumps, they can sit in any depth of water in your sump with out it screwing with the skimmers performance, Once you dial in the air and water ratio it doesnt change, so as an example you need to clean the bowl, you simply valve off the air input, twist of the skimmer cup, clean it, replace it and then turn the air back on and walk away. Easy to add Ozone if you so desire and the stones only require cleaning every half year or so (on mine I have been running them alot longer without issue). Most of all is that the skimmer hits all the numbers.

Are there plans for hob skimmers? Or is it simple to.convert your custom skimmer to hob with it holding 5 gal of water

HTC EVO
Josh, at this time we are not planning a hob skimmer, and we would not recommend hanging 5 gallons of water(8# per gallon) on the back of an aquarium. However, our skimmer can be used as an external skimmer, so you could have it sitting next to your aquarium....

Oceans by Design Dual Carbon/GFO Reactor

dualCarbonAd_zps8bbaffb4.gif

Our reactors are built from sturdy 1/4" walled 4" cast acrylic tube measuring 14" tall for durability and long life. Each reactor sits atop a 3" smoked acrylic stand bringing the overall height to 17". The GFO reactor comes with a Maxi-jet 900 pump(1 only for the GFO reactor) which fits nicely beneath the smoked acrylic stand. This provides the exact flow required to gently suspend the GFO particles so that the most particle surfaces are exposed. Also included are 3.5" dia-1" thick inert foam sponges(2 for the GFO, and 1 for the Carbon) and 1/4" acrylic strainer disks(1 for each reactor) to ensure no particles make it into the aquarium or other reactors. The GFO reactor will hold up to 1# of media, and the Carbon 1/2# of media, without effecting performance. The GFO reactor is pre-plumbed using 1/2" clear PVC and Schd 80 fittings and our slip fit lid system.

Although designed to be plumbed directly into and power the Carbon reactor, the GFO reactor can be used individually.

Our plug and play system makes cleaning and maintenance a simple chore.
