Subjects like this is what lead me to reef tanks :) so now I make both parties miserable. I spend all of my would be socialized tax dollars the democrats want on tank equipment and I vote in favor of the environment to maintain the largest tank diversity possible costing corporations more money to run businesses driving up inflation :)

Hmmm a new party perhaps? ;)

I don't belong to either of the major political parties. I like to do my own research and choose who to vote for based on what I find to be important.

I don't want to see a huge political fight start out here. Whenever I see snippets showing only one side of an argument, it always worries me because it isn't balanced. Here's an example of a one-sided argument http://www.dhmo.org/

Well, I think they are wrong. In fact, I'm a proponent of Dihydrogen Monoxide. I'm so confident of my view that Dihydrogen Monoxide is not bad that I have actually ingested it on more than one occassion and I'm still here aren't I?

I couldn't agree more, Curt! Snippets of arguments are never good - you just can't begin to understand the whole issue. I don't want to get into a political debate, and I also don't want to see this thread turn ugly.

I haven't noticed any ill effects from Dihydrogen Monoxide, either.

I just want to remind everyone, that bashing will not be tolerated. So far, this thread is fine, but like the DSB debates, it has the potential to get ugly. Feel free to post your opinions. Remember, there are people that will disagree with your views, but please be respectful of them.

Now, anyone have problems with Dihydrogen monoxide??

Here Here Curt & Nikki,
Politics, Religion. Both topics that cause heated disagreements. I look to FOX and then to CNN and MSNBC for political enlightenment...........Then it's time to take a shower and get rid of all the mud.

I have strong political opinions, but I won't get into them here. It's almost a certainty that this thread will degenerate into name-calling. (I have to admit it may be me who does it.) There's just something about an impersonal forum like this that leads to misunderstandings of peoples' intentions. Don't get me wrong, I realize we have to discuss the issues. This is just not the best place to do it, IMHO.

I have to admit the threat of censorship that hangs over threads like these kind of bugs me. On the other hand, there are lots of unmoderated forums set up specifically for discussing politics and religion, where you can say anything you darn well please, and you can always go and hang out there if you need to get something off your chest.

I suppose it's an interesting question whether reef-keepers are more convervative or liberal than the general population, or are more or less "green", or whatever. I like jlehigh's point, that it's difficult to figure that out ahead of time. There may in fact be no correlation at all. Unlike other groups where members have common interests, like the NRA, or the Sierra Club.

Why do we want to know the political opinions of our fellow reef-lovers, anyway? If it does turn out that reefers as a group are more politically conservation than you are, or more liberal, will you still want to keep reefs? We share the love of this hobby. Isn't that enough?

I seem to have verbal diarrhea lately. Somebody please stop me.

Larry

Well put Osterman I agree. I'm sure ther are some liberal Bush bashing sites (maybe thats where that origanal post came from) as well as conservitive Kerry bashing sites where those opinions would be more at home. I don't see anything in that post that affects my aquarium or will help me out with my reef.

We're all adults here, and this is the water foutain thread, any chance we could have a spirited debate with out resorting to name calling. I have faith that reefers are a intelligent bunch that should be able to have a debate with out name calling/flame wars and what not.

Not trying to upset the mods, or insight a riot. Just saying on a board this size in a nice community we could try and have a debate.

Namecalling doesn't get anywhere, and the person your calling a whatever is probly the person your swappin frags and trading your reefing stories to.

IMHO,

Eeek....I don't like censorship either. This is the Water Fountain forum - designed for Off-Topic Discussions. This discussion is fine, as long as we don't start bashing each other, and stick to facts. Nice post, Osterman

Nikki, apologies if I accused the moderators of something before they even did it. If there's one thing that will get me riled every time, being accused of something I didn't do is it. (That's why I liked the movie Anger Management.) Again apologies.

If one of us gets out of hand on this thread, that same person is likely to do it on other threads, so maybe it's people that have to be "moderated", not topics. Trolls have ruined many a good board, and having fair-minded moderators can save a board from going under. I'll all for it. Just please be tolerant of a little rough play before stepping in.

Perhaps we should try a civilized conversation and see how it goes? One thing that helps me when I find myself getting outraged is to try to remember that most people on both sides are good people, and that they generally all want the same thing. We just disagree on how to get there. However much I disagree with some of the things Mr. Bush has done, I do want to believe that he means well. He's not evil, Kerry is not evil, we all want happiness and health for every member of the human race. Why wouldn't we?

Is that naive?

What we absolutely MUST oppose in all of our political leaders of whatever stripe is the tendency to demonize the opposition. Any leader who accuses the other side of being evil or unpatriotic or whatever will not get my vote. Both sides do it, I know, but that doesn't make it right.

Just my humble opinion.

No apologies necessary!

Just please be tolerant of a little rough play before stepping in.

No problem! All discussion is welcome on this topic. The members of this board have been outstanding, and I know sometimes we can disagree greatly on many topics - but we have shown to be open to others.

I've been in some discussions (not on boards) regarding political issues, and I've found that I can argue both sides if I want to (must be why my high school history teacher said I should be an attorney) - what's important is how political decisions effect YOU and your situation. Government decisions effect my life completely different than your life, so my views on issues will be different. As an example, my brother happens to be an Officer in the Marines, so military decisions will be important to me. We are all looking for a better life and success for ourselves and others...however you define that in your own life.

What we absolutely MUST oppose in all of our political leaders of whatever stripe is the tendency to demonize the opposition. Any leader who accuses the other side of being evil or unpatriotic or whatever will not get my vote. Both sides do it, I know, but that doesn't make it right.

Absolutely!

This is not a place to be discussing politics period, I strongly disagree on it at this location. I do agree that there is some great places Elsewhere to make such discussions.

I completely agree with Scooterman. I personally do not want to read rants against my political party on this forum. You are not going to change my opinions and I'm sure I won't change yours. This site is about our hobby and reefs in general and should not be a sounding board for politically driven bashings. There are much better forums for that.
