my blue tang got ich about 3 weeks ago, but has been ick free for about a week now. He is eating well and is coming out into the open so everything seems to be going well with no spots or anything. I have been quaranting my sailfin for about 3 weeks now and i was wondering if it wuold be ok to put him in my display now that my blue tang has no visible signs of ich? My blue tang is the only fish in the tank right now. Was planning on putting him in tonight? wuold that be ok or shuold i not do it yet?

I wouldn't do it yet! Ich goes through a stage where it is invisible and people think it's gone but it's not.

Do some more research on Ich but I think you need a few more weeks and you maybe should have both fish in hyposalinity quarantine while letting your display go fallow for several weeks. I'm not the expert but this is the kind of thing I've read.

I hope someone else chimes in soon who has been through the process.

Ich is still present in your tank, and will be until it no longer has a host to complete its life cycle. If you want to be 100% sure your system is free of ich you need to rid your display and both fish of ich. Your tank will need to be fish free for 6-8 weeks. Also, during that time you can treat both fish for ich (a preemptive strike for the sailfin). Hypo-salinity and copper are common treatments for ich. However, I'm not an expert, and I do know some fish are more sensitive to certain treatments. In other words do your research.

SteveS is the man to talk to about this. I know RonJ has done a lot of tang treatments as well. See if you can get either/both to post on this one. ;)

Better yet this is a fairly common question in the Reef Fishes forum (of which SteveS is the moderator), you should be able to find some relevant threads with the search tool. :)
