so this morning i left for school and my temp of water was at 78 degrees and when i go home it was about 92 degrees!!!!! i was like wtf?!?!?!??! so i quickly lowered my water down to about 80 degrees. Now everyything is good and stabel but i have a few worries. 1st will my LR rock die? and 2nd why did my heater randomly do this? its a really ghetto cheap one so that would probibly explain it lol but yeah is there anything i have to worry about?

yes get a better heater, like a stealth. your lucky that you have nothing in there to kill other than the LR. I wouldn't worry too much, just keep an eye on your water params...the LR may have some more die off from the extreme temp.

Def get a better heater. In the future do not "quickly" change your water parameters. It will just increase the stress.

I'd get that heater out of there ASAP. Don't even wait for a replacement. Your water temp won't fall much below the room temp of the room it's in. Heck, I haven't had heaters in any of my FW tanks for years and have never had heaters in my SW tanks. They stay just fine. I'd test for a small spike in ammonia or nitrites here in the next week but I think you'll be just fine.

Get a controller to almost eliminate this from ever happing, almost but way way better than the cheap heater controller!

I have a ranco controller on my heaters to keep this from happening.

If you buy the appropriate sized heater even it it gets stuck on it shouldn't be able to raise your temp that much that quickly. I would also suggest getting a lower wattage heater.

Buy a ranco controller. Will be the best 80 bucks youve ever spent. Using a heater without one makes it literaly a ticking time bomb. Every heater will fail eventually. Maybe it will be a month, mabye a year, maybe 5... But you defintly dont want hundereds or thousands of dollars in livestock relying on one 15 dollar piece of equipment to survive. Its just asking for trouble.

Ranco is the only way to go I use a dual stage one for my chiller one for the heater. By chiller I mean the small fan over the sump
