since joining the site a couple weeks a go, I heard that term in a thread somewhere.

well today I found out how that works :) what an awesome community of hobbyists. even the thread I saw about some rather rare expensive coral recently. for an incredible deal for some beautiful corals.

we look forward to the day our Reef becomes stocked and lush enough to pay ot forward as well :)

Thanks folks

frag it or pay it forward recently Myteemouse had some nice zoas on sites go for 25 a head he gave some away to someone and they are to give 4 away and so on and so on. just to keep the cycle going.

There was an ol time reefer that was very pay if forward. He was the type of guy that gave you corals. Not for money. He gave you corals because he was a very gererous person. He has since passed away. His name was Bob Moore. While I never had the chance to meet him, I have met some of his friends. His tank was given to a fellow reefer, and close friend who has maintained the system and is still up and running. The man who was given the tank is also a very generous person and has always honored Bobs pay it forward belief. Alot of Bobs friends are this way. Again, I never met Bob but his kindness is still remebered and honored once a year with the PSAS club. The original concept was a frag swap. You could come and trade corals. Bob had a very nice blue stag that was appropriatly named the Bob Moore stag. It's kinda an unwriten rule, that when you get a frag of it someday, you'll get it for free. When it grows out. You give the frags away. It's not required, I've seen people sell the Bob Moore stag. When you give it away it honors Bob and his gereosity, kindness and memory. To some of the guys who have been in the hobby for a long time he was also not just a reefer but a friend.

I hope I haven't spoke out of place guys.

Yeah but the "pay it forward" term has become so frequently used, it's kinda lost its specail significant meaning here in the pacific northwest. I know it's not a phrase we invented, but it's a motto we use specifically to honor Bob. Carry on that belief.

It's not as simple as
Yeah, the PNW is an awesome place to be a reefer!

Aww so Bob is the only pay it forward to be used in WA. so everyone else just has to donate frags if they wish? I thought the Bob Moore Frag swap came about to honor Bob. not the Bob moore "Pay It Forward". maybe I am confused lol it is late after all

I'm not sure what your saying.

You don't have to honor anybody, or donate frags, or do anything.

All I know is the guy asked to please explain. (post #3)

As for the PSAS Bob Moore frag swap, I am not affilated with their club so I cannot speak for them.

pay it forward frags is a great idea. My local club here has a "share the love" thing. People give corals with the expectation that you wont sell them, but frag them later and give them to someone for free. I try to do this when I find a new member who lives near me and give them a frag or two to add to their tank.

That is exactly what I am learning :) I have heard of some Frag it forward where some may ask that you take YOUR free frag and offer a couple free frags out when it is large enough to frag out, prior to selling any and/pr just frag it forward in general.

Ive heard of folks that frag out thier corals as back up insurance should they have a tank crash. so they can come back and ask for frags to restock thier tank( god forbid).

Yesterday. I recieved loads of macro for my new fuge and a couple corals. that I can sustain currently to add to our tank.

all I know is I like this mentality and I will certainly be a happy Frag it forward member too when I have the love to share LOL

I have received a few fish and some corals from reefers on here. I just waiting for the day I can help others. Right now all I have to give is macro with pods. Tank needs to grow out befor I can frag and all that. But I very much understand the pay or frag it forward idea.

we get down south fairly often, and always love to see the DT's of reefer's. ask my questions. meet good folks.
So anytime you folks like to show off your reefs let me know :)

For Me Personally,,this is more than just corals and fish...Pay it forward is all about the reef keeping hobby as a whole...When John and I first started,we were warmly welcomed by the community..Many people helped us with corals,fish,equiptment..ect..But it was the wealth of information that was invaluable...the help we recieved during crisis situations(Tank blowout...120 gallons on the floor)..help keeping our livestock alive...the Re set up...and so on...this is a place where peoples tru colors really show.
This is about people and how truly generous we all can be!!

Ill agree with that, in my short short time here on this forum, Shane and John....I have learned so much from these threads and a couple of great folks that share thier knowledge and experience.
I do appreciate the wealth of knowledge here

There are no rules about pay it forward. This generous philosophy is a wonderful attribute of many in the reefing community.

The PSAS tries to keep the memory of Bob Moore and his "Pay it Forward" mind set alive through the Bob Moore "Pay it Forward" frag swap each year. It is a time to share corals and re-tell the story of Bob Moore.

Also, as Brett stated, there is a blue stag that is locally referred to as "the Bob Moore" coral that most feel should never be sold, only given away. I was given a piece of this coral and look forward to the day I can begin to pay forward with frags of it (It has been moved quite often in the year+ I have had it, so has been a bit slow to take off in growth)

The PSAS also has a member only program called "Don't Break the Chain" (DBTC) fashioned after a similar program in California. The DBTC is a program where a member donates a frag(s) and can place conditions on the recipients. Typically the conditions are regarding how may frags must be given away before the recipient can sell any frags, and often the giver will reserve the right to get a frag back should they lose their colony. This program is a great way to share higher end corals while reducing the risk that the receiver will just try to profit off the opportunity and also gives the giver some insurance should they lose their coral. I think Myteemouse's offering was intended to be a DBTC coral.
