I really don't know what to say.
I was killing some Aiptasia and rasied my canopy to get the ones in the back of my rock work. Looked in my overflow and there were so many I couldnt see my return pipes. I took my pipes apart and to my surprise there was a penny that some one put in my overflow box. I have no kids and few enemys. I just thought I would post what I found in my tank and to think someone would do such a thing(wouldnt dare say what I would like to say). I dont know how to handle this. One thing I do know is I try to hook/help reefers out and to think someone would put a penny in my overflow is just wrong. This has me really POed and as of now I dont even want to talk to anyone. So thanks to whoever did it.
PS sorry if I pointed fingers but I have put alot of thought into this and there is NO WAY this was done by anyone but a fellow reefer.

I hope they made a wish :)

whats the big deal? just get it out

chances are someone in your home tried to be funny
My gf walked to the tank with a salt shaker saying "is it the same thing?":D:D

I found a AA battery in my tank one time. I was pretty pissed. Can't say anything went wrong with the tank tough.

You should take it as a compliment, someone was soooo jealous of you beautiful tank they had to try and crash it with a single penny to bring it down to their crappy level. :D

Seamonster- I would suggest that the "big deal" is the intent of whoever did this. He did in fact get it out. If you are not aware of what copper can do in a reef tank I would invite you to do a search.

As for someone in his house trying to be funny; not on your life. his wife and 2 dogs would not rise to this. For it to reach his overflow (such as it is located), and be a penny, it was not an accident. The act was intentional.

OMG.... So sorry to hear this Tracy. I thought you were just kidding around until you got the thread edited. Who would do such a thing to you of all people?

Is that an OLD copper penny or one of the new ones. I don't believe there's any copper (well, 2.5% copper and 97.5 zinc) in the new ones, but there still is probably something horrible in them.

Sorry to tease you. Now I understand.

Its Ok vicki. Its not the penny that has me worryed its the fact that a fellow reefer would do such a thing. One penny or two or three wouldnt I think kill anythig ? in 400gal+ of water. I know Don W lost some stuff from money that was placed in his tank. I just can't swallow the fact that someone came into my house and would do such a chickin **** thing and the real kicker is there is a 100% chance after this person did this is I gave them a deal.
There will be no more of that. Well not till I cool down.
As far as it beening a BIG DEAL **** ***

Damn, I can't believe someone would do something like this to a fellow reefer let alone someone that has been so giving! hope it didn't cause any problems and there aren't anymore. BTW, hope you don't need the trap back real soon, the sixline is too damn smart.

That is really messed up!!! I can't imagine why anyone would do something so spiteful and seemingly hateful. I'm really glad you found it and didn't suffer any losses. You're right, the chance of a single penny in 400 gallons of water are slight...but still. And it's just the thought that someone would do this. Makes you want to think twice or maybe three times before having fellow reefers over doesn't it. I'm really sorry this has happened to anyone in this great community, especially you!!

As long as you need it todd your good. Ya it sucks. Theres only two way I can think of on how it got there. One is when I put the pvc together I had a hand full of pennys when I did it and one fell out or someone put it there. I need to geta test kit and test for copper. Could be why I don't have any ICH LOL.

that is just plain wrong and childish of the person who would do that, I often have worried when people come over because so many are ignorant and do stupid things kind of like the salt shaker comment as well as I have heard of beer, cocane, weed, all sorts of things from others. As you said one penny will not do anything but it IS the idea that they would do it. ok time for a metal detector before entering the house...

Thanks, ya I know. My thoughts are all over the boards. Here is a pic of the tank back a few. Up to high for a kids wishing well and if a kid can make it up over the light and into the overflow he/she should play for the M's

Thanks morgan. The only time I leave someone unattended is to go inside to tinkle or get some bags.
I really am trying to not think it was a fellow reefer. It just cant be!. Now its got me thinking there could be some behind my LR and just one had fallen into the overflow.
I will be getting a copper teat kit tomorrow. Not only is this bad for me but to all the other great, kind, friendly, willing to help others out, reefers that are out there.
Best of luck

Wow Tracy. Glad you found it before something bad happened. As for where it came from... I have found all manner of things throughout my house in places they don't belong... including loose change. Crazier things have happened you know.

Was the shelf above the tank in use before the tank was installed?

It's hard to tell from your pictures, but what is on the shelving unit above your tank?

Could some spare change been left up there long, long ago and gotten pushed to the back of the shelf one day, causing it to fall of the back of the shelf and into the tank?

I just cringe to think that someone would involve themselves in a hateful act like this on purpose. That's about as comical as adding sugar to someones gas tank. I hope your test for copper turns out well.

What a crappy way to start your day. Have you noticed any of your critters showing ill effects? The reason I ask is because most of the copper tests I have used are a piece of garbage. I would save some money, and just watch your tank closely. Chances are it had been in there for a while, and if nothing was showing ill effects before...................................
Good luck still!!!!

That is a really rotten thing to do to somebody!!!!!

I have a Salifert Copper Test Kit if you want to borrow it. It is expired, but I think I only opened it once, so I'm guessing it should most likely be ok and at least ease your mind. I'm in Puyallup, just across Wildwood Park from Vicki's.
