ok just wondering when it comes to live rock base rock, or dead rock or what ever

Does poundage really matter

I mean would it be better if I had 300 lbs of lr in a 125 or would it be better if I had a piece of livecrock that barely weighed enough to stop it from floating but was as big and long and wide as a 125 gl tank

Seems like lbs shouldn't matter but size should be better

Just curious

ok but wouldn't a rock the same width length and everything hold just as much bacteria as a 75 lbs rock compared to a 250 lbs rock with all the same creases and crevices and all same everything just 1 being more solid

I guess I just don't understand what difference It would make

Think of it like comparing a brick to a sponge both the same size! The brick will only hold so much water while the sponge can suck up a lot of water. Not all rocks are the same, some can hold way more bacteria because it it porous, so the sponge will hold more bacteria that is what we need from the LR's. Now with that said they usual rule is one or two pounds per gallon of water. I have a 125g tank & I only have about 80lbs of rock, I don't like the looks of a tank packed with rocks & it is easier to flow water around the back & in between the rocks, which is a good thing, also I have a light bio-load, so I don't need lots of bacteria.

Make sense?

remember too that a 5g bucket of sand will have more surface area for bacteria than a dumptruck load of rock ;)

cool great info guys i was just thinking and came up with the question!!!

i thought it was just perculiar but i guess i kinda understand now!!
