PhosEx made Green water?

Hello to everyone. This is my first post at RF, and this is my first question. My aquarium is 160l, filtered by Eheim 2227 wet/dry canister and Sander AH 500 external skimmer. The last reading of PO4 is 0.5, so I have put JBL PhosEx Ultra as on directions (I have rinse in running water and between filter layers). Few minutes after this, water became sligthly green. All fishes and inverts is looking good. What has happened?

I am unfamiliar with this product, hopefully someone will have an idea as to what is going on. I'll see if I can get a little more info on what it is made of - I did find this: JBL PhosEx, but it doesn't say anything as to what the material is. Is the green getting worse? I normally associate a green tint to the water as a bloom, but since it happened right after using this product I'm unsure. Are all your water parameters alright?

Hi Peca,

Welcome to RF!,

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the product either. Chances are that the green color is just some dust from the product washing off. If you had washed it more thoroughly, maybe this would not have been as drastic. However, who knows? I would not think that the color will cause problems and will most likely settle out in a few days. Also, a finer filter in your canister and/or running a little carbon may help to clear up faster. Sorry I can't be more specific!

My water parameters are: temp = 26°C, ammonia = 0 ? (I use only ammonia alert), NO2 = 0, SG = 1.023, kH = 10. I also got an answer from JBL, Germany. They said that it is possible that some crossreaction happened between iron (from PhosEx) and some other elements in water. No, green is not getting worse, and it is realy slightly green.

Neither of that, their answer regarding this problem is: "Dear Mr. Novakovic, this is a very strange news for me. I suspect it is some kind of crossreaction of the iron with some other element in the water. It should disappear by itself after a while. Kind regards JBL

Few days after putting JBL PhosEx, level of PO4 is 0.2.

Glad to see your PO4 is coming down. When I began using ROWAphos, my PO4 dropped to zero in about 3 days. Has the green coloration gone away? Are you running carbon also?

No, I dont like carbon...or to be honest in Belgrade you can not afford good one (or anything for marine aquarium).

Welcome to RF Peca, If I'm not mistaken that is a type of crushed porous rock, used in FW tanks, not a norm for SW but so read it will work for either. I think the rock is processes in a manner for purification, (maybe cooked, boiled) I think the rock itself is void of minerals etc. I've seem some similar for fw that looks like wafers (Honey comb ceramic) at petsmart. Not that this info would explane the green tint lol.

I`m not sure abouth material (rock or something else) bat JBL claim:
Phosphate levels exceeding 1.0 mg/l in freshwater and 0.1 mg/l in saltwater lead to algae problems. 1 kg of the products permanently absorbs 20.000 mg phosphates. Effect measurable after only 24 hours. For fresh- and saltwater aquariums.

I believe that it will but at what cost, or would it leach back into the system if left in for a longer period of time. or something to that effect.

My marine aquarium had been newly started, so this is my first time that I had used phosphate remover. I’m not totally satisfied with PhosEx, but this is the only phosphate remover which I could provide. I bought almost all my equipment in some other country, not in Serbia. We don’t have any shop for marine aquaria, only for freshwater. So, I used FosEx about 5 month, PO4 drop down from 0.5 to 0.2 in first few days and stayed at that level.
This is what they (JBL) said about PhosEx: Easy to use with the practical net bag. In a normally stocked 200 l fresh water aquarium or 100 l marine water aquarium contents are sufficient for 5 - 6 months (package contents absorb 18,000 mg of phosphate) the bag is put easily between the filter media in the aquarium filter.
