I have been reading that Green Star Polyps are extreme water polluters and was wondering if this could cause poor polyp extension in my Acro's? I have several Acro's that came from tanks that had great PE, but in our tank have little to none. Polyp extension is better at night on our corals but would like to get PE during the day if this is possible. What is everyone doing to increase PE during the photoperiod? Thanks.

Sounds like allelopathy. Your GSP may be waging chemical warfare on your sps. SPS will probably loose. Is this a small tank? Are the GSP close to the sps? Skimmer? What kind? Are you using carbon? All are factors in this one.

It is a 75Gallon w/30 sump. The star polyps aren't right next to the SPS but they are relatively large in size. Probably 8X8". I am running carbon right now in a canister filter until my GFO and Carbon reactor arive. Skimmer is a Euro-reef RS135. Would the allelopathy only be occuring during the day or at night as well. Most of my SPS do have PE at night just not during the day.

Hello,
Many Acropora species do not have their polyps extended in the wild during the day but only at night. So it can be quite normal and not a sign of poor health. Other reef inhabitants bothering the corals are the main reason for this. A couple of large water changes a week apart or so can help to determine if it is a reaction to other corals.

HTH,
Kevin

Ive recently removed most of my ricordias, most of my zoas, my one leather and one large hynodphora. Since doing so, my day time PE is getting increasingly much much better.

I don't think that fish are nipping at the corals. I can't imagine that it is the corals exhibiting their natural behavior of no polyp extension during the day as they came out of a tank that has good polyp extension during the photoperiod. I am going to remove the star polyps and see if that helps.

would zoos and mushrooms in the same tank do soething to the sps?
