so i got this new tang last tuesday. he is a spotted yellow eye tang. he acclimated very well and was sampling algae off of rocks withing 30 mins of being introduced. however, i have been unable to get him to eat any food that i prepare. whenever i open the doors to feed, he hides, and my rabbitfish is so protective of his seaweed clip that he tries to fight the tang off everytime he gets near. i have been feeding generous portions of mysis. he just wont come out while i have the top doors open and he stays hidden for a while after i close them, so the food is long gone. he does not yet appear to diminishing, i assume that there is enough algae in the tank to keep him happy for now as he is constantly grazing on stuff i cant see half the time. i know it is still early, any thoughts/suggestions?

Mine hid for weeks eveytime someone would come buy the tank. He kept eating algae off the rocks and glass, slowly he got used to me. I now he is a pig. Very agressive eater including dry food. When you see him out aproach the tank slowly and let him get used to you.

kole or yellow eye tangs I agree usually start out very skittish and become quite bold after a while.

Is he a young tang? If you have any natural occuring algae you don't need to give him anything else because they feed on the glass and rocks all day long.
As you feed your other fish flake he will start eating it on his own. It may take a week or a month, as long as he is feeding on the stuff in the tank, give him time.

i had to add a second clip as Curtis said...i have an xl hippo and a small hippo in the same tank..i have to keep the seaweed clips on each end of the tank...the larger one still bullies some when it is feeding time....make sure the tang is getting some seaweed in its' diet....the algae in your tank will keep it alive, but it really needs foods with vitamins....are you going to supplement vitamins with its food??how large is the tank that these fish are in???

the tank is 125g. i do provide vitamin enriched foods, and a variety of them. he isnt very young, i believe that they get to be about 6-7 inches and hes probably at 4.5-5. i dont think ill worry yet as he is constantly grazing and is getting more comfortable with me. he still doesnt like multiple people in the room though.

it probably just needs a little bit longer to adjust..as long as its stomach isn't pinched in, it should be ok after another week or two
