Yes use a Total Dissolved Solids meter to see if it is doing its job. TDS should be 0-10 RO membrane and just plain 0 after the DI portion of the filter.

Hi Yall....great discussion..! i myself am thinking ( soon too ) of getting one for my 55 reef....I live on the 3rd. floor so it will be a benifit to have one . i go to my LFS to get water at 1 $ a gal. with all the valuable info here , my question is ...? how do you get rid / collect the waste water from the system ? do you connect to a drain some where...? and i heard from a fellow fish head that the in-put water must be Heated...? because if not the filters aren't effective enough .? so this was from the only person i know who had an RO/DI ....and i kinda can't be confidant from his experience's..... cw.

could anyone explain me what's the function of a kalkwasser, how do you run it and why some people choose it because i've always confused the kalkwasser with the calcium reactor?

Help with sand???
Has anyone used the white quartz sand in their reef tank. I'm setting up a 135. I like the fine sand better for the little critters I think. - thought about the oolic but I read that it tends to blow around if you have good circulation. It is also a bit expensive. Sure could use some help on this one.

Quartz (or Silica) is a very hard sand. Some of it is very sharp and is not appropriate for all species of sandbed animals. On the other hand, some of it is sufficiently smooth. I have successfully run a DSB on a nano tank using sandblasting sand (which is typically made of Silica).

Hi Roly, do you have water flow like a return pump or something to keep the water moving? It is a good idea to keep the water in motion, by a closed loop, return pump or some means, even for fish only tanks.

First off, i'll apologize if i'm not posting this question in the most ideal forum. i'm still learning how to navigate this site.
i am setting up a ca reactor system and am searching for a place to fill my 5 lb co2 canister. a few welding shops i contacted said they 'exchange' co2 canisters. that is, they won't fill mine specifically, but swap me out for a filled canister. is this standard procedure or should i look for a place that will fill my canister? anyone from seattle who would recommend a place?
i've heard a few folks warn against filling your co2 from a welding shop (vs. restaurant supply shop) b/c of potential contaminants that can be introduced into your system. any validity to this concern?

Thats typical here in StL too. Try looking in the yellow pages for other Welding Supply shops that will fill yours. It will take longer if you want to keep yours, but they generally have both aluminum and steel tanks, so swapping out for whatever one you have isnt that big a deal. I just swap mine out.

Should we use bio balls or not... Some places they say yes to them and others say keep away. Being new to this (only one year in) I want to know if I'm doing this right or not... please help.

It depends on the type of system. Not to be rude but I'd do a little reading on basic reef chemistry. The bioballs are great and work fantastic for a fish only system that can tolerate nitrates.
