Question....since I have had my 120 gallon salt tank...approx eight months, I have had two powerheads overheat. I am sure it is some cleaning issue, although I think one got sand in it.

What can I do to prevent this from happening?

What in your opinion is the most relaible powerhead on the market? My LFS manager says that many powerheads fail after a year or so. The ones I purchased are on the cheap side....Odyssea brand, but I am not going to get a more expensive one unless I find out that it will be more relaible.

Thanks for you help.

For the money the good ol' Maxi-jet cannot be beat. But unless you mod them you're going to get very direct type of flow pattern. Seio's and the new Koralia's are great also if looking for a wider flow pattern. Then if you really want to step up $$$ to a great PH take a look at the Tunze Streams. Never seen one but the Vortech is also cool looking

I have had Maxi-Jet powerheads run for about 5 years continuously, and still kicking. Just regular 6 month cleanings, and still using the same impeller.

I don't think I will use other powerheads (if I do need powerheads), but those Hydor Koralia's are really turning heads.

Best,
Ilham

the aquaclears 402s i have have been running for 10 strait years and almost 11 and never failed. and always in sw environment. and dont heat up at all for me.

that's really impressive!

i agree though that the maxi jets are really some kick a.. little pumps. they just seem to be bullet proof.
i don't know how many powerheads you're running, but you might want to look into the korillias or the tunze nano streams
for a 120. they put out big flow and the korillias at least, won't totally break the bank.
