Problem with candy canes

Yea for sure if you can isolate it into a quarantee tank it would be best. A few years back an importer brough in a couple that had that issue and it went through alot of the country by the time it was done.


Egunman usuall all you see is the holes they leave behind, also they are usually micro snails

Just wondering because I seem to have what look like tube worms attaching themsleves to my candycanes and that seems to be where the tissue is receeding.

Worms can also be boring types to, might be an idea to scrape them off if their are causing a visable irratition

Thanks Mojo, I don't have a QT ready to go, but I tossed a sponge filter in the sump in case the problem spreads to other coral.
I moved the coral to the frag tank, but they are plumbed together so probably not all that effective for prevention.
I did the iodine dip last night, but it looks pretty rough.
The other lps in the tank show no signs of distress so far.
Are there other things I can do for prevention?
Should I sacrifice this coral to minimize risk?

Todd thats a tough call, I guess you have to look at it and see if you think its worth trying to nurse it or call it a day?? Just try to make sure you remove any of the brown/white jelly from it away from you system. As in put it in a bucket and do it their, then back in the frag tank

The other option is also to start chopping of the effected heads to??

Hmmm, I can do that. I did give it a good swish after the dip. I don't see anything on the coral that is causing the problem, some of the flesh has a brown color, but it is not at all jelly like in the photo. I thought about fragging the better looking heads off, but I don't want the problem to spread. If I dip again and frag the best looking heads should it be ok as far as stopping the spread to other coral?

Well what we now is that whatever you did prior (the first fragging) either stressed it out or weakened it to the point where perhaps a disease took hold, perhaps even a parasite of some kind. Or again it could have been their prior and told control once the coral was weakened. Regardless The heads that are dead are dead so it might be worth doing a chop shop and trying to concentrate on saving whats in good shape.

Um, I have not moved, fragged, or otherwise molested that coral for more than 6 months.
It has grown from 1 head to the many that it currently has without me changing anything.
I don't know what precipitated the decline, and that is what worries me. If you think it is wise to prevent the spread to other colonies I will remove it entirely. the coral on the other side was from the same original colony and it looks fine.

Oh I thought you had split the coral. Hmm not good. Is their something you added to the tank since then??

No, that is what is making me crazy!
I have not added anything for three months, no fish, no coral, no rock, nothing!

Well looking at your tank pic it could be the torch above it sending streamers. Its hard to tell now that you have it out of the tank. I had the same kind of thing happen years ago, I moved a frogspaw to a new location, my Hammer (which was a monster) started to attack it. I never saw anything but then one night I did some night time spying, and their it was, a 4 foot streamer coming out of the torch and just pounding the frog. I moved it back further away and it settled down.

But in your case you never know, sometimes one coral (same family like that) slimes to clean or something similar another coral sences its presence and begins the battle. After all that is the way they do it in the wild.

Thanks again Mike. That coral above and behind is in fact a hammer, and while I have not noticed it acting badly, your experience shows that it can happen unobserved.
I will hope that it is not some other unknown pest, and frag the damaged coral and see where things go.
I think I will also do some late night spying and see if the hammer is on the offensive, it would give me peace of mind to know what did the damage. Of course with my luck, the hammer will be well behaved now that the trumpet is gone.

na just having lots of issues that we cant figure out!!!!! anybody that is good with coral predators or coral stn issues shold contact him.....having some issues
