around there really
well my qt tank is up and running now, this weekend im gonna add a cup of sand from my display, and the sponge that i put in my qt tank.

i think ill like having it around, i now have 4 tanks in 1 room they kinda wrap around the room

here is a video of my 30 gallon 125 gl 75 gl and 40 gl.

i guess i love fish, oh and thats not including my 45 and 30 gl sumps on my 125 and my 75 gallon

any suggestions would be appreciated

all im using for filtering is a bio wheel a ammonia sponge, and some carbon in a tie up sock bag thingy that you put the live carbon particles in

and like a 30 gallon power head and a digital thermometer

thats about all i still have to get something to cover the bottom of the tank and the back, and some hiding places made of pve or some kind of ceramic tile

Congrats on the new set-up & welcome to RF! I have a hard enough time keeping up with one tank LOL & you got 4, that's nice! Look forward to seeing more later!

lol thanks but the 40 gallon is fresh water so it aint that hard but thanks for the greeting!!!

what size tank do you have and what do you keep????

Trillyen,

1st, and most importantly... WELCOME TO REEF FRONTIERS!!! :D :D :D

Personally, I wouldn't add ANY sand into my QT tank. With the various treatments you will be using your QT tank for, any benifit of live sand would quickly be lost anyway... not to mention it makes it that much harder to keep things clean in there over the QT period with your fish.

Having a sponge ready in your existing sump, then using that in a HOB (hang on back) type filter is an excellent idea! That allows the sponge to culture the bacteria required to help process the Nitrogen Cycle... and makes it very quick and easy to setup your QT in an emergency!

Again, Welcome to Reef Frontiers... and I look forward to reading more from you in the future! :)

Welcome to Reef Frontiers!!! :D

I'm really glad to see your QT up! That's great. I wouldn't waste time putting any sand in there (unless you have a fish that needs to burrow, then you want to use clean pure silica sand). Generally, you don't want any kind of substrate or rocks in quarantine tanks. PVC is a great idea to use for hiding places. I've used plastic pitchers, large PVC, and coffee mugs for hiding spots in quarantine.

Here is some reading for you:

A Hyposalinity Treatment Process

and this quote from the thread A Quarantine Process, in reference to procedures with the quarantine tank

In Use Procedures

Monitor and test for ammonia, nitrite, pH, specific gravity and temperature daily.
Hold water quality constant and good.
(IF the biological/sponge filter was not seeded or it stops working during a treatment, control ammonia and nitrites by large water changes OR use chemical absorbents (e.g., Algone) so long as the chemicals won't and don't interfere with any medication. Make water changes whenever any ammonia is detected; make water changes when 0.05 ppm or more nitrite is detected when quarantine is performed on fish.)
Make adjustments to water daily to hold water test results in their proper range and to keep them steady (Make adjustments more often (2-3 times per day) if the biological filter is not or stops functioning.)
Remove uneaten foods 1 hour after each feeding time.
Make 50% or larger water changes every week or more frequently -- assuming no treatment is being administered. Follow good water change techniques. (If a treatment is administered, change water according to medication instructions. If water changes are needed during treatment and the treatment isn't over, medication must be added back to the QT water to keep medication at a constant, recommended concentration.)

Hey! I to am glad to see that qt up!!;) How's the Trigger doing??

BTW..Love the avatar!!

Hey scooter man, wow i thought i was good at diy MY GOD dude looks like you spent a fortune on just the wood i can see we will have alot to talk about in the future when i get my 500 gallon tank. are you good with acrylic???

Looks like your project is coming along great just take your time dude dont rush it its all about patience in this hobby, i just wish i could follow my own advice. if everything goes as good with your tanks when there up as good as your diying is coming along now youll win some kind of award or something!!!

hey laked!!, yeah im not gonna use any sand. i am gonna use a sponge and the only filter stufff im using is like carbon in a filter sock a bio wheel and some kind of sponge for ammonia, and i also have a sponge in my sump gathering bacteria i plan on putting in there after about a week no skimmer

how will not having a skimmer effect my ammonia levels after feeding my fish for a while in the qt tank since theyll be in there for about a 4 week visit??

and my temp in my qt tank wants to stay at about 83.7, but its a digital thermometer that may be it, but if not would that be a problem???

hey nah20, and b-fly girl!!!!! Thats a great read nah20 that helps alot thank you sooo much, for some reason i feel like i know you guys already!!:D

the trigger is now decease, but dont worry im not gonna buy another 1 im gonna wait and qt the fish that i do have, and by the time the fish that i have now, and my dt tank is ready to display again, my qt tank will be ready for the 4th yes the 4th juvi clown trig (please dont hate me im learning:cry:)

thanks you guys for all the help, and your time.

glad you like the avy b-fly grl, lol!!!

Most everybody goes through this, believe me! Just remember once you get your fish healthy and back in your main, quarentine your new Clown Trigger for at least 4 weeks before putting him in the main..Then all should be good and I won't have to nag at you:D

Water changes are the best way to keep ammonia down. Do them everyday if you have to. I have a hang on filter on my qt..I put Bioballs in my main sump for a few weeks then transfer them over to the qt. This works pretty well and I can set my qt tank up pretty quick that way.

You'll want to try and remove as much of the left over food as possible. The quote I had in my previous post, recommends removing the uneaten food an hour after feeding.

You might as well go ahead and QT the fish that lived with the trigger. Take it through the hyposalinity process. Meanwhile, the tank the trigger came from can be fishless for 6 weeks or so. That way, when you get another fish, the display is all set, as well as the tankmate.

Thanks for the complements trillyen, yea this hobby does take time & toll, I've been working on my project over a year now, guess I can't rush it any more than that LOL! I don't know squat about acrylic, wish I did! Nikki has you pointed in the right direction stick with it & you'll get it!

Hey thanks again guys. Dang you guys be up early in the AM serving and protecting our little finicky fishy friends like me huh

yeah im all about this hobby right now 2

yeah when i get fish in my qt tank i will be doing a daily water change at least a every other day change, and im only gonna feed them what they can eat

its ok if ya nag me b-fly gurl your good at it, and usually its the only way ill listen:oops:

thanks again guys and ladies, and dont forget to look me up if you guys ever need any diy help

oh and im not gonna catch my fish and qt them until this weekend, i be to tired from work to mess with them

By the way hows come my other fish are not dieing from ick, i mean i know they have it but what about them carries them on???

And im pretty sure the last clown trig i had would have made it if not for the ick, he had so much personality and would even contest the dominant damsel of the tank for territory. He even got along with my cleaner shrimp

Ick will keep reproducing and attacking the fish. This weakens the fish and can eventually kill them. Its not always a fast death, like Velvet, but imagine the torture of these little parasites feeding and itching on your skin and eventually killing you:eek: Secondary bacterial infections can also set in, so you want to get the fish in treatment before it goes this far..

P.S. Glad my nagging is working with someone!;)

LOL Too funny!!! :D :D

That Clown Trigger was very tiny, and at that stage of developement they do tend to be awesome tankmates. Years and years ago, I had one that ended up being just under 12" long... and had grown into the definate "BOSS OF THE TANK"!!! Then again, if I had a mouth that could rip through stone, I'm sure I could be boss of my office also! ;)

Trillyen,

It's good see someone else doing things right. Setting up a QT is probably the best thing you do for our little water friends. I've had one setup and running in the garage for over a year now and anything wet that goes in my display goes through a 6 week QT process for eval. It only took 1 battle with ick and I was convinced you have to QT everything. It's the safest thing to do to protect your display and also give injured, sick, diseased creatures the help and treatment they may need.

Keep up the good work.. Looks like Nikki and the others have you headed in the right direction.

LOL, b-fly gurl You so crazy, but you know you stuff, ill learn from you yet!!!
