Question about refugium

1. Great idea, mesh mod the skimmer. (you can look it up using search)
2. NO MUD, land based mud possibly high in aluminum, promotes algae. Chyto algae (brillo pad algae) Can get some for free or cheap from another with too much, needs thinning
3. Yes, any cheap light, can get one from Home Depot

Get some sand and put it in there too. Use a cup from your display tank or someone else's (make sure they don't have ICH or AEFW's) and put it in the fuge to seed the sand. Chaeto is good, maybe some little pieces of live rock too.

Meshmod is a plus

The only thing about using sand or miracle mud in such a small fuge is it will not provide much benefit for you if your purpose for it is for denitrification. You'll need a deep sand bed which again in such a small fuge won't make much sense...Better left in the main display IMO. However, if your purpose for the sand is for some other reason like supporting certain critters then that's different. Just my thoughts on it...Go with what works best for you though as there is more than one way to go about things in this hobby :)

if you are setting up a refugium for its original intention to provide refuge for the micro fauna to (re)populate you tank, then I believe that you should provide a niche for all types of critters. I would use a little rubble/rock, some fine sand and a little macro algae

If you are setting up your "refugium" to grow algae for nutrient export then technically it would be an algae or turf scrubber and you would only need algae.

Do you guys thing this one is too small for my 30g then? Im wondering if I should order the bigger one (24" instead of 14") and put the smaller one on my nano?
