Rapid Tissue Nicrossis?

I just wanted to share my recent experience with RTN. This was a very rapid disease that took place within 20 hours. It was very frustrating watching one of my favorite corals die . I have since read a lot about RTN and learned that there are many causes and unanswered questions regarding this disease. I feel I give my corals very good care but still one died . I just wish I knew for certain what caused this so I could prevent it from ever happening again...

yes.. all my other SPS are doing great! This was very strange. Ohhh... I failed to mention that it was a newly added coral; less than 4 days before it started showing symptoms.

See if you can take it back, bring a water sample, it may of carried over stress of something?

Actually, I don't think it's that uncommon for a melting sps to not affect other sps in the tank if you have really good flow or if that frag is pretty isolated.

The problem to me would be if another sps was downstream of that one and it got some of the slimy stuff on it. Then it would maybe start to degrade, but supposedly if the coral is really healthy and not stressed it should do fine even if it is downstream of the dying frag.

Sorry to see such a nice piece fade fast like that. I certainly have had my share of RTN over the past year or so. It is never an easy thing to watch, whether it be because of shipping problems, self induced stress, or quite often a very difficult to figure out event ...

Did you quarantine it before you placed it in your tank? Did you do a Lugol's dip or an iodine dip? When you do a water change do you add the water to the tank or a sump? How long did you acclimate the coral? Where in the tank did you place the coral (high, middle, or bottom)? There are a lot of different variables that could have caused your coral to die. Mine was adding water to the tank instead of the sump. The temp change shocked my coral and caused the RTN.

Nope. Did not quarantine it, nor did I dip it. I pour newly made water into the main tank..always have with no problems. I get the temp the same as the tank. Acclimated it 15 min for temp, then every 5 min added a little tank water to the bag, repeated 4 or 5 times...same as I always do it. Positioned in the middle of the tank. I know this is a good spot since it came from 400 mh and mine are only 250.

Tort...Ouch...Glad to hear you are getting a replacement. I hope you learn what caused this and prevent it from happening again. I wonder if a Newer shipping bag could have prevented this (breathable, flow is not restricted as much).

Bad luck doni. Good news on the replacement. Usually its is cause by some kind of stress, being 4 days out of shipping I would imagine that would be the cause.
Heres a little trick that has worked for me several times. If you see the RTN creeping up the stock, get some crasy glue and cover the bare skeliton with it, make sure you go up a tiny bit onto the tissue also. What usually ends up happening is the rtn stops and the tissue grwo over the glue.

I agree with Mike, I've had some luck with encircling the edge of tissue necrosis with including good tissue within the glue bead. Bob

Man I wish I had known that I would have tried anything to save my coral from this. Hopefully there won't be a next time but just in case I have something new to try. Thanks
