Subject: Hammerhead Problem
Hello,
I have a Hammerhead pump that I believe has a Blador motor on it. The motor is black. Anyway, this pump has been running unrestricted on my 180G aquarium for about 4 months now. Anytime I dial back the outlet ball valve my tanks temp jumps about 3F-4F total. This pump has been making a constant hum noise that is vibrating thru my piping and thru my acrylic tank. I can hear it through out the walls in my house. My biggest issue is that the front end of the motor itself it hot to the touch. I need some guideance with these issues. I can take the pump out of service but will be a real pain in the butt by spilling water.
Thanks,
Derrick

Derrick, the only problem is the hum, the motor will be 120 deg normally and if you close it the water will recirculaste in the pump head and pick up heat ...that being said, it sounds like the motor may be too hot and the hun indicates that its struggling to turn....can you send me a pic of the pump and its setup...what diameter pipe are yusing in the in and out?

Chris,
Since I have just over 8 years of Navy experience with pumps I assumed that the Motor front bearing is to blame. I can hear a light rattle in the electrical motor, not sure what it is... possible bad bearing. I do have a fan blowing on the motor to try and keep it cool... well cooler. A picture of my setup wouldn't be easy. I can only describe it to you. So hear it goes...
I have 2x 1.5" Drains with 80gpm Strainers in the tank for my suction that combine into a single 1.5" line immediately after the line leaves the back of the tank.
For my discharge, It is also a 1.5" line that goes out of my stand, then vertical about 6ft. then turns into a Horizontal 1.5" PVC Manifold with 6x 3/4" PVC outlets. Also have another 3/4" PVC line coming off of that vertical line to provide flow down low in the tank.
Hope that helps. Its a cluster of mess back there!
