I like the idea of the Automotive LED strip, I purchased one for $14(blue) a few months back to supplement my Fuge light for when I keep frags down there. Just wired it to a 6v wall wart, quite bright.

Just another option....I'm using the Marineland Single Bright LED lighting system, it is only about 3/4 inch think...6000K led's. $40 for the 18-24inch model at petmountain...Marineland Single Bright LED Lighting System Aquarium LED Light Fixtures
