After a year of hardship and changes I am finally getting all the way back into the saltwater hobby! Last June my fiancé passed away forcing me to move back in with my parents. Unfortunately my 55 gal tank would not fit. So I since I had no corals, they had all died from an agley attack a few months before the move, I put a little rock, my cleaner shrimp, pistol shrimp, and watchman goby in a simple 5 gal tank and hoped for the best. After nearly 7 months they are all thankfully still alive and doing well but I am ready to get a better tank.

So within the next week I will be purchasing a Red Sea Max 130D! I am purchasing all new rock and sand. I know that it will have to go through the cycle period and I’m ok with waiting. I really want to go with Black Tahitian sand but I am not sure this is the best idea. Does anyone have an opinion before I buy?

I can't wait to get it all set up and post some pics!

Wow! Sorry to hear about your fiancé :doubt:. Hope all is well with you now...

As for the sand, I see quite a few people using black sand lately. Personally, I say go with what appeals to you most as you will inevitably be the one looking at the tank more than anyone else so you have to be pleased with the look.

All the best and be sure to post some pics of your progress. :)

im very sorry to hear about your fiance... and hope you are finally starting to feel better. :)
and conga rats on your new upcoming system!!

i would ask...
are you completely sold on doing the red sea max 130d??
i only ask because for the same money or less, im thinking you could have a nicer tank if you purchased a few things seperately...

I like the red sea max because of the convenience of the plug and play system. I do not know enough to build a tank on my own, but I am open to suggestions!

some years ago I seen a black sand for african cichlids that would help to buffer the water and keep the higher ph. May be a better choice if you can find it. I am actually using the tahitian moon sand in a tank with tonga branch and it looks pretty sweet.
