So here is a pic I took this morning.. Sorry cell phone pic in a garage with poor light.

But hey the tank is up and running and no leaks!!!!!!!!! It is my first sump set up. It ran all night long no issues.. Now just waiting for my skimmer to come in so I can install that. Then build sides for the stand to add extra strength. and have to build some sort of riser to keep sump off of the floor.

tanks is a 70 and sump is like 22

I'd run that skimmer in a container with a 50/50 mixture of freshwater and vinegar for several hours.
It will improve the performance right away.

I have a gallon jug of vinegar I was thinking about adding to the tank and letting it run for a few days but was not sure if that was a good idea..

The reason I suggested the vinegar for the skimmer is it helps to remove any manufacturing chemicals/oils and helps break-in the skimmer so you get better performance sooner.

My question is why would you want to do that?

cause i bought the tank second hand and was told it was never filled with water. so i figured to help clean things up that might me in the tank to help insure that it has been cleaned of any bad stuff that might be in there. Just trying to be careful and thinking a head..Rather more safe then sorry vinegar is pretty cheap.. I really am trying to go slow and do things right. Many years ago I rushed into the hobby and had lots of set backs and then gave up.. So now I ask tons of questions and try and learn before leaping..

When I have a new tank that is from a store or another hobbyist I will move the tank out doors and use a small amount of mild dish soap with a rag and wash it out. Rinse it 2 or 3 times and it's usually good to go.

Vinegar is very cheap and can be used as a cleaning agent, but I usually use it for old used equipment that has calcium type deposits.
It also works great for breaking in a skimmer, but I try and use a 50/50 mixture or higher.

Cleaning it with anything won't hurt at all.

I would suggest you add some type of bracing to your stand to prevent it from racking. Once that higher mass starts to move to and frow you will have a mess.
Looking great. I am also all in on blacking out the back.

yes black back ground for sure...

yep it is getting skins between the legs on the sides and the 2 front doors. Getting some help from a cabinet maker buddy so should be good and strong. I did climb up on the table when I got it and bounced around and no issues and i am a big guy like 275lbs of fun..
buddy also said due to the way the legs are put on it will not twist even if no sides were installed. but I like the idea of it being even stronger.. being that the baby boy will be running around soon enough...

Glad to hear you are on top of the racking issue.

The expression on your Tough Guys face has "In about 10 seconds I am going to have a Pungent Package for Poppa" writtin all over it. LOL

Sweeet! Starting to look like a Reeftank now bud. You'll like having the stand skinned and doors on it hiding equipment, you can even install Baby-proof door stops to keep him from playing in Skimmer Goo

Cheers, Todd

I don't think you can go wrong using vinegar. Another cheap cleaning remedy is bleach. It's toxic if not rinsed well but it kills old algaes and when rinsed it leaves no residue. We used it at the LFS I worked at to clean everything in aquariums.

here are some pics of the side skins and doors going on and then a a finished and staned stand and sump stand.
