Any new, news with anyone? I keep barbs right now. They are just stunning. I'll try to get some pics of them. Also I am new to this forum but I have been a member of both seahorse sites for a while now. Im glad others are interested in learning and keeping.

You don't happen to have an extra male comes do you? I've been looking for one for a long, long time. We have a comes female (from the original brood born 10/18/03), a barb female, a female I think is a kuda, a pair of young reidi, 11 adult dwarves and 24-25 six week old dwarves. :D

Ok newb question I was looking at gettin maybe a pair of dwarf seahorses in a 10 gallon rectanlge tank....but I was told I would have to "burp" them when air bubbles are stuck??

Is this true? as this person who told me this also sold me a choc chip starfish a valentini puffer and 2 cardinals which aren't all compatible in the tank we were establishing...seeing as how we want corals...and shrimp--which is now out of the equation..

If the burping is true how often is it?? Are they demanding?? And if so am I better off--if not enthused in the "burpin" area to just get my fill at the Shark Reef where we now get our fish??

The Shark Reef is a great place, but none of those animals are compatible with dwarf seahorses. In fact, in a 10 gallon tank, you can have alot of dwarf seahorses, they grow no larger than 2 inches. Additionally, they must be fed live baby brine shrimp on a daily basis. The burping isn't always necessary unless the seahorses has contracted daily. Seahorses are supposed to have the ability to flush out their pouches. However, it's recommended that airstones aren't use with them.

Keep in mind that because live baby brine shrimp need to be fed to the horses on a daily basis, there's a good chance hydroids will develop, which are deadly for seahorses. That's the reason why most people start out with a more "sterile tank" without live rock, live sand, or macroalgae.

Ahh thanks..yes the seahorses would be in their own tank..i had wanted 1 pipefish and 1 seahorse as they are compatible but I think they both need mates yes? and the lil tank isnt big enough for both breeds...hmm maybe I will look into them someday!!

Where are you getting the seahorses from? A 10 gallon tank would be compatible for gulf pipefish and dwarf seahorses. At least a pair of each. They're found in the same general area in the wild. As far as I know, people usually keep a large amount of dwarf seahorses. When I had them, I had 10 pairs in a 5 gallon tank.

awesome maybe when we get better at this saltwater thing I will look into that!! I love the lil tank set up that The Shark Reef has..how the horses just swim right up and seem to look right at you!!

I'm not sure if you're aware, but the species of seahorses that The Shark Reef carries is H. kuda, not dwarves.

Ok maybe I need to make sure I"m on the right page before answering questions... lol... It's been a LONG day. The USPS lost my dwarves and I'm so upset over that....

You can keep 3 pair (6 dwarves) in a 2 gallon tank. Water takes upkeep, but they are very happy in a tank that size. A 5gallon is really nice once they start having babies :)

Wow!! yeah i know the ones at the Reef aren't dwarf..but those were just the first horse/pipe tank I've gotten to see up close..and I like the Reef better than the LFS that sold me the bad tankmates just cause they were cute :( I hate being a noob lol :p  I think I may look into the dwarf seahorses more!!

Any good places to look? I notice alot of you guys are in WA :) :D

I really like Eric at The Shark Reef. Otherwise, there's Blue Sierra in Issaquah. I really do think that the larger captive bred seahorses are easier to keep than dwarves. However, I did get started with dwarves.

The larger seahorses are much more likely to interact with you then the dwarfs and are more active but the little guys are cute too. I don't find hatching brine every day to be a big deal once it's part of the routine.

If you really want dwarfs (or any seahorses) I'd suggest reading up on them at www.seahorse.org as there is much you need to know about their needs. Then you'll want to have the tank well cycled.

It's possible we'll have some available in the not too distant future.. we are just starting with the dwarfs but if we get more born soon then we'll be in a position to adopt some out. You could check with me when you are ready - if I can't do it I can let you know where to get them.

Hi,
I am still interested in dwarf seahorses and H erectus... would love to be on the waiting list of anyone who is willing to sell their captive raised offspring.
Thanks,
Kate

I have 5 seahorse, they are very cute and each display a unique personality; One question to you guys, one of my seahorse seems to have a problem with bouncy and can't seem to dive under water, its been like this for 2 months, floating on the surface most of the time in a laying position. It eating regularly and seems to be quite healthy. Anyone know what kind of sickness its has and how to help it?
