I just bought a new 90 Gallon tank and wanted to know if I could get some advice on the in-sump skimmer selection. Thanks!

+1 for SWC 160 cone. Its cheap ($250) and does a great job. Also small footprint. I have one running in my sump now, and love it.

Check out saltwaterconnection.com or something like that

here's a review http://reefbuilders.com/2010/02/24/swc-120-160-cone-protein-skimmers-unboxed-impressions/

SWC 120 & 160 cone protein skimmers unboxed and first impressions

With a retail price of $199 and $249 for the SWC 120 and 160 cone skimmers respectively, any prospective buyer should be skeptical of freakishly low price for a cone skimmer. The entry level cone skimmer buyer should be asking themselves “what’s the catch?” but after handling both models for the better part of yesterday we can tell you that the SWC 120 and 160 are definitely more skimmer than what we come to expect from the price. Sure the off-brand skimmer pump leaves something to be desired, the cone’s seam is not flawless and the wedge pipe flow control is not the most acute. However, the friendly price and minute footprint more than delivers on two benjamins worth of foam fractionation and the cone-scape is likely going to start looking very different once these two models start making the rounds. Follow the break for full unboxing expose with construction and design notes all along the way.

Thanks guys. I was looking at the 160 model last night. I want to go with SWC or Octopus but I had dealt with Oct. in the past and I was not too impressed with their CS so most likely, I will go with SWC.

well i have the 180 model and its on my lr holding tank and pulling all kinds of crap out...i had a reef octopus extreme 250 on my 210 and loved that as well. but for my first cone skimmer this skimmer really does a good job.

My DT + fuge is about 90 gallons and I'm using the 160. Seems like it is doing great. You should talk to skimmerwhisperer about it, or you could talk to a guy named luke at reeffiltration.com who tests them. He knows the skimmers very well.

the 180 cone is a sicce based cone skimmer, It's replacing the mini s model,
it will be available in june and retail for about $379
it's rated to 200g.

also, this is why the mini s is on sale, SWC still has many of them, and they can be purchased for $279 from a couple vendors. still a great skimmer, and the sicce pump on it has been upgraded with better pinwheel and venturi to get 40scfh. it too is rated for 200g, so it's a great deal.

Did a little research on the Mini. I am SOLD! I think I will pick one up shortly.
Next project. Sump.
What size should I use? (PS it will be for 90 Gal tank)

Well, I got a 50 breeder for my 75 tank, and its great. I think 40 or 50 breeder is the ideal size. I bought my 50 breeder used off Ashton for $50.

Never as much size as you want in the sump tank. I was hoping to have a fuge in my sump, but once all was said and done there really wasn't room for it, so I moved it to a 20H tank on the side of the DT and left the sump with a bigger return chamber. Here are some pics of my 50 breeder, if I can find em.....

many people buy complete 75/90 gal systems with 20gal High glass tanks as sumps.

I've got a 29gal tank under my 75gal
it holds my filter sock, ASM Mini G skimmer, internal 24w UV sterilizer, 250w Heater, a media bag full of rubble rock, and my 1050gph return pump, as well as about 10-20lbs of live rock I decided I didn't want in my display
(not much "Extra" room, but not really crowded)

I'd love to have a larger sump,
more volume, more room, etc...
but this is as big as I can get thru the door on my stand

Cool, thanks for posting the photos. Now I have some idea of what to consider.
