I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if sponges and gorgonians are fairly easy to keep? I found a supplier with some pretty colorful ones and they are reasonable priced. I've just noticed that most people here don't keep them.

Also wondering about their lighting needs.

I have hundreds of sponges in my tank. They arn't huge fans of light and they get eaten often. In particular by my butterfly's and angels. Also they enjoy phyto and zoo supplements.

Cheers,
David

Store bought sponges are generally hard to keep, less you feed a cyclopese "snowstorm" to your tank every other day.

I do have a ton of light lavendar, neon green and peach sponge(that came in my liverock cuople years ago) growing throughout my rock's crevices that is probably hardier than even coraline algae(and it needs no light). It's so hardy, I can (& do) rip off a chunk that's growing out with my fingers, mush it like playdoh and cram it into another crevice. I don't think it's hurt a bit doing this, it just takes a week or so for this new clump to reform a little mouth/hole.

some of the green sponge i got:
