Well, i have seen alot of sps probs in my days but here's a new one. I have almost a swelling of a few tips on a large purple table acro. The three tips have had this swelling for a few months. They still show good PE. The thing that is strange is no parameters have changed and teh coral is growing well. Any idea's?

I don't know if its a bacterial, predator, parasite, eggs.......its new to me. Hopefully its not contageous. I may just cut it off.
Thanks,

Luke

well thats just crazy but i do think i have seen this before if everything is going great i say let it run if things start to look bad clip away

Is it a cottony swelling of hard like a cancerous growth?
It looks like the early stages of skeletal/skin cancer (or so I call it)
My A. Nana has a cancer Ive been watching for about six months now. It doesnt appear to be contagious or spreading.

Hello,
It is not a contagious disease. I have seen it before on several occasions. I believe it is some type of abnormal growth caused by some water chemistry issue but not one we typically measure. When I cut the portion off and examined it with tweezers there was a hollow area under the swollen area. The skeleton also appeared thin and weak over the swollen area. I've also seen a similar condition on Pocillopora damicornis. It appeared as a pea sized bubble of tissue that waved in the current. Both conditions did not transfer to other corals and disappeared over time.

HTH,
Kevin

Good deal, thanks for the replies. I'll monitor it and update this thread if it starts to spread or if it heals.

I've seen something similar and found a few posts here and there. People are speculating that it may be caused by overdosed amino acids. When we had this happening we cut down our amino use and it went away so I would have too agree. Luke...ya been dosing with aminos?? Increased the dose lately??

Only thing i dose is mag and calc. I haven't changed anything in the last 4mths or so. I did end up fragging off the infected piece. So far the colony isn't showing any more signs of this. We'll see what happens i guess. Thanks for the reply.

Calc always ranges from 400-450, alk is always around 8-9 and mag is always right at 1200. Those ranges haven't moved in the last few yrs.

The only thing i have changed in the last 4mths is the temp and vodka dosing. I stopped dosing vodka and raised the temp from 78-80. Pry two months later i noticed the swelling.

What were you dosing with Vodka for. I'm new to SPS and I'm having issue on keeping them alive. and what is STN which people talk about? And what should your water quality be at PH, Nirate, Cal, Mag and Alk ?

Thanks in advance for any help. Mike

My miami orchad had a similar problem. Mine was it grew over some algea that had grown on the tips. It got fat and puffy and looked like it grew over it. Been a few months and its fine now.

Duckmans, If you post a thread in the new reefers forum addressing these specific questions, you will likely get better answers for those specific issues rather than resurecting a seven month old thread thats completely unrelated to the basics of water chemistry..

I will
