thats the way i have mine. how much flow you got going to that thing i know with my reeflo dart it takes 2 mins to alternate
 
Depending on the size, I believe they make a 1 inch and a 1/2 inch version, I know that they due have a maximum flow rate. They have a plastic, rotating, spinning, gear that switches the water direction. Too much flow will cause it to not work. They are notorious for getting sand particles in the gears and thus stopping the rotation. I have rinse and jiggled and wiggled to dislodge different particles out of mine. Sometimes a vinegar soaking. Try to make sure it recieves a "clean" water supply will help with the recomended flow or pump.
 
I've heard of some people a while back when I had my 75gal getting their scwds and have them not work which was why I never invested in one. I opted for a sea-swirl instead and was happy with the purchase. :)
 
i have had a 1" for about 6 months now no issues what so ever. i also have a 1" seaswirl with no issues
