Hi all. Just to let you know...there are reports of a number of these specimens coming into L.A....and I'm guessing LFS will be getting some..if not in your area, probably online..

If you are looking for one or two, and have gotten one recently, please post. I am still waiting to set up a tank for one or two of them, but will probably not be getting some this time around.

And..if you do like anemones, please keep in mind that if you are not serious about keeping one of these, do NOT try. They need some serious water flow and intense lights, and very clear water.

I know of several people keeping them for years, including Rod Buehler, so hopefully he will chime in.

Best,
Ilham

that's a very kewl looking anemone dood :D .
now the price they're asking at liveaquaria is a heart breaker :p but i'm sure it's worth every penny :D .

Luis i can see you want one pretty bad since you posted 3 times in a row

Why is the reefhotspot one so much cheaper?

it might have something to do with the 14 day guarantee that LA offers :).

I agree. Please do some research before purchasing a gigantea anemone.

Rod,
How do you rate the gigantea anemones in terms of difficulty to the H.magnifica anemones? I've been sorely tempted to purchase on these, but dont think I've got the appropriate conditions in my tank for one.

Hi Nick,

I cant really say. Call it luck, but I have never had any problems with either. I have had 100% success with every anemone that I have ever had come through here (not bragging , but just feeling lucky). My mag has only been around for about 2 years though. My purple gigantea for about 3, and my brown for 13-14.

Back about 1 month (or so) I removed my light from the magnifica for a few days. It walked into a seio powerhead ( I know, my bad). A few days later I moved it to another tank and its doing GREAT!. I think with good flow and strong lighting either anemone can be kept if you can get a healthy one to begin with

Its been exactly 1 year and one week since you have been here. My mag has probably tripled in size, even after the powerhead mis-hap,

Rod

Gawd....it was plenty big enough to begin with.

Not to derail the thread, but I was able to save my H.mag after the infection it caught from the one I ordered on the net. I dipped it for about 15-17 hours in doxicyclene (100mgs in a specimen container from LFS), with a 100% water change in the container and fresh doxicyclene (another 100mgs) after the 8 hour mark. Its doing just fine and getting larger.....of course its no where near the size of yours.

Is your H.mag in the same system as any of your other anemone's? There is a local guy here, who has both an H.mag and an S.gigantea in the same tank. They are touching with no reported ill effects thus far...going on 6 months.

Like I said, I'd love one, but I'm leery of spending that kind of money on the anemone only to have it not ship well or not do well in the same tank as my H.mag.

Another consideration is the fact that my tank is BB. I've read some anecdotal reports from otehr hobbyists stating that S.gigantea will do just fine on rock work as opposed burying their foot in sand.

Your thoughts on this?

Nick

Im not saying it doesnt happen, but I have yet to see a gigantea bury in the sand . Often at the sand/rock interface, but the foot is always attached to to a solid surface (rock). I have also seen a few that were actually up on the rocks. In fact, one of mine could be considered up on the rocks.(very low rock formation)

My mag was in the long look-down with some BTAs. I moved it into another system. Not in the same tank, but its in a system that houses my 2 giganteas, my large rose, and now my mag. All in separate tanks sharing a common sump. It is a fairly large system. I usually run carbon.

I didnt think my mag was very big when you were here. Maybe it hasnt grown that much.. Its now about the size of a basketball. My oldest gigantea is full grown and every bit of 20 inches. My youngest is about 14-16"

Hmmm...thanks for that bit of info. I always thought they were a sand dwelling anemone.

I thought I remembered you housing all them in a common system, just wasnt sure.

Might have to think about getting one.
Need to do some more research.

Tell ya what Rod,
You buy one of those Gigantea's, keep it for 2 months, and I'll come buy it from you when its healthy and able to survive a short car ride down to St Louis.

Nick

Hi all. I ran across this a couple days ago...such Gigantea paradise...oh I can only wish for now...Such beautiful creatures.
