Has anyone heard of a "jimmy or Gimmy" tang? I saw this awesome fish in one of the many LFS here and would like to find out some info on it. I know it is very, very rare and expensive but something for a show tank "most definitely". Also any different than a Black or Purple tang as far as hardiness and ease of care (other than ich)? Thanks in advance for the info and help.
 
Not sure if I welcomed you yet, but if not, I just wanted to welcome you to the forum:) Can't say that I've ever heard of a "jimmy or gimmy tang" before...I need to go and look that one up. Best of luck with it:)
 
That's what the guy called it. It goes for about $2000 for a small (1 1/2"-2"). It looks like a purple tang but it's black with white accent lines on the body and a yellow to white colored tail. Maybe that will help you guys out with identification. Thanks for the warm welcome to the forum.
 
holy @$#%. i hope that it doesn't die the day after you get one. that would be a tough loss. are u taking out a loan to get one :)
 
Maybe in my next life....... I would love to get one, but I'm going to get the Black tang next month (more in the price range) to go with the Koran. I got a Australian Harlequin Tusk this morning and my angel chases it all over the place but it eats like a pig (just like the Koran). No cleaner shrimp now....

does it look like this? if so, it is a white-spotted surgeon.
 
No, if you took a purple tang and mated it with a Black tang, that would be close. If you look at a red sea purple tang with the black accent lines on it, now take a black tang and put the same kind of accent lines that are white with a dull yellowish/whiteish color tail, that would be it. I will try to get a pic on my phone this weekend and post it.
 
Yes Ed that is what I was looking for. Thank you. No one has any for sale, lucky for my bank account. That is the coolest tang I've seen since I started looking into marine aquarium keeping.
 
Boy Koran guy this is a tough one!

Hi Koran Guy I have looked over my book Surgeonfishes Of Hawai'l and the Word. By John Randall and From What Ed Found they are a Member of the genera Zebrasoma and being one of the seven species gemmatum. The genera Zebrasoma is "Named for the striped body in referance to the color of the largest species" Are mainly called "Tangs" derived from the German word for algae. The Other great stuff i gleaned from this book was the Jewelled Tang is from the Madagascar and Natal ?? The largest Specimen ever recorded is 9" and they have 18 upper and 20 lower teeth. Its primary depth in the ocean is 25 meters to down as deep as 60 meters. It was named Gemmatus from the Latin Pertaining to Gems "the bright white spots on its body"
A very pretty fish and very rare in the trade I learned alot from reading this book about that species...I Hope this helps good luck If you plan on getting one I would imagine It will be quite expensive...Jeff
