Help Support Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum:

I agree with the 2 drain lines. That will leave other options open. Part of your overflow can be dumped into the fuge area. Part of the overflow could be feed into a pellet reactor.
Redundancy, if one gets clogged. More plumbing practice? or another leak??? LOL

Sweet I will definitely be going with the two individual drains and tap off to other items like my refugium. I do appreciate the info. I just hate plumbing and being an electrician I should be able to grasp the theory of it. So being the person that I am I spent the last two days reading the wonderful world of fluid dynamics and mechanics. Hopefully this will help me out. (REALLY LAST TIME I HAD ISSUES WAS A DAMN SNAIL) but I have to figure this thing out. During my timed breaks from such great readin I was able to complete one LED set up and now only have 2 more to go.

DUDE SWEET hey did i say SWEET....cant wait to c it up and going.....hope you have adjusted well down there.....it has been the wierdest summmer ever here.....give me a call sometime buddy.....when you r not riding your new bike...lol

It is actually really nice here. mI know that I joke about the heat, but the last 8 years all the way up to August, I heard the wife complain because she was wearing a jacket, and the mountains still had snow. So all in all the kids are getting their dose of vitamin D and all is well. As far as the tank. really going to take this one slow. Would like to say that I am going to build a new stand for it, but really just going to be installing the same old tank, with new accessories. Still a lot of fun, and frustrating at the same time. I tried to order a SL2 for my reefkeeper and it seems that the controller and probes are on back order for several months. So had to go another direction. Really wish I could have had those for this install. I did however just pick up a bio pellet reactor. Not sure if I am to excited about it. I have heard mixed emotions about them. We will see if it makes the cut or ends up in the garage next to the other aquariums parts. I am really excited for the light project. As the kids call them "lights of god"

floyd,

I have a ReefOctopus 140 bio pellet reactor and it does make a difference..they key is to add bio pellets slowly..key word here: slowly.....or you will be introducing too much bacteria to your tank and then can have a small cyano outbreak....it will also take 3-4 weeks before you see any difference.

I bought the CADLights cone Biopellet reactor, and seems like it is very well built. It states that it holds up to 750ml of media. Not quite sure how to introduce this to the system but from what I have read it is a slow process when the tank is already up and running. As far as a new system not sure how to go with it.

Kirk, I got your PM and will respond here shortly.

Floyd,

For established system, you want to add 1/3 of media, wait 4 wks, then add another 1/3, wait another month, etc..until you reach the max level of pellets.

For a new system, you might be able to get away add more than 1/3, but not sure.

So just to give a little of an update. Here are a few pictures of the lighting assembly. I only have one heatsink done so far. Been busy.

why did u go with the meanwell p series and not the d seried the only difference is the p shuts down at 10% and the d shuts down @ 5%. both are adrino controlable

I went wit the PWM because the controller is a PWM controller. I understand that the dimmer may only go down to 15 percent, but I have no need for it to dim all the way to zero. At 15 percent the amount of light is miniscule. So being that I do not know what the possible component failure could be from running a PWM controller on a analog driver I chose to keep PWM with PWM.

i know lots of peeps who run the d's on adrino with no problems. and at 15% my lights are quite bright still and had to start acclimation at 10%. and will only run the board at 30% when aclimation is totally finnished.

OK that is awesome. I am glad that your "Peeps" feel comfortable enough to do that. I would suggest to them to actually read what a duty cycle is and how the PWM circuit actually works. I understant that you can do it, never questioned that. I am just going to build it the way that my Peeps say it should be done. Alright I have no peeps. Damn it the secret is out. So our systems are different. You are running your system at Full Bore, and I will be running each of my strings at 600mA. So already you have doubled my current. Therefore your 10% is quite different then what my 10% is. So again I thank you for your opinion.

So the first light cluster is finished. I find that thing called "Work" keeps getting in my way. Pretty rough schedule. This week is my long week. I work Sun, Mon, Tues, Wed. Long schedule. But plan to have the lighting done next week and move onto the real fun. Plumbing. Can't wait. I think I heard Todd say he wanted to come down and help with that.

Also I was playing with my dry marco rock and was wondering if anyone has a better way of putting a couple pieces together. I was going to use the epoxy stick being that it is dry might hold up a bit better. I know that there is the pond foam, not sure how I like it. I know that it works well. But not sure how to make it look like it is not there. I have heard of people putting sand on it while it is still wet. Last time I tried the sand was too heavy and it flattened it out. Any ideas would be awesome. I know that there is the ziptie method as well.

I work a 3 on 4 off, 4 on 3 off, compressed work schedule. 12 hour days. Really rough (LOL). Being in the military when you are on deployment for 9 months and you work 12 on 12 off for 9 months this schedule really is the easiest thing I have ever had. I love it and joke about it all the time to the wife. I love my new job.

Good for you..most ppl can't say that they love their job..to them it is a job :-D

me..i love my job. Like a kid going to college..cant wait to go to work. :D

So last night I just thought that I would play with the pump I just got and filled up a 35 gallon trashcan with regular water. I wanted to see how fast it would pump it out with 2 feet vertical and 10 feet horizontal and wow was I suprised at the amount of flow at the other end of the PVC. I realized now that I should have timed it to see what it is really pumping. I reall do not think that I am going to have any issues with this pump being able to handle the flow. On my 75 with dual overflows I had a little mag 12 pumping through the refugium and it worked. We will see when I set it up in the garage for leak check.
